35 Terraplane Trans Adjustment
Hi all. I am having trouble getting the trans lock out adjusted properly. I have read what is in the manuals but no luck. Right now it easily shift 2-3 with the clutch engaged but locks out R-1st, with the clutch disengaged it shifts into R and 1st no problem. I need help on how to adjust the 2 rods. In the pictures I can find it looks like there are springs but I only have 1 spring on the drivers side lower and none anywhere else. It appears to have been jury rigged so I want to know the right way to do it. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how much you already know so I'll assume nothing (no offense intended!). Go to the mechanical procedures manual, part 10 -- http://www.hudsonterraplane.com/tech/MechProcMan/Section10.htm . On page 3 you'll see an illustration of one side of the transmission, showing the link rod on that side. There's an identical rod on the other side.
Your rod should look like this. If not, go to your local hardware store, stock up on springs, washers and nuts, and get to work!
The actual adjustment's quite simple, made even simpler if your wife or grandkid is in the car and able to step on the clutch at your command.
When you push in the clutch pedal the rod moves up, and the bar (78) slides so that its notch aligns with the horizontal plunger (77). Only when that plunger is allowed to move outward (into the notch) can the shift take place. So it's only a matter of asking your helper to push the clutch until it's mostly down (not all the way) and then adjusting the nuts until the helper can move the shift lever to the R-1 position easily.
Note (in the manual) that the early 1935 production cars did not have exactly the same setup, but that you can retro-fit it with parts from the late 35, or the 36-7, to upgrade it.0 -
Thanks Jon,
no offence take at all. I'm not sure if I have an early or later model but mine does look like the picture. I'll work on it tomorrow with a little help from Miss E.0 -
Just to clarify, with the clutch pedal depressed, you need to have the cut-outs aligned with the pins of the detents, both sides. With the clutch pedal out, you should not be able to change any gear, the pins should limit on the high sections of the slides.
