Hornet racing in ARCA
So much has been written about the Hudson Hornets NASCAR heritage, but there is more to it than that.
I found this story great although brief.

Lot of Hornets running amok in AAA stock car division back in the 50's. Marsh Teague was one of them.
Big Bill France took a dim view of the competition, however. Told NASCAR drivers if they drove for anybody else than him, they'd be out of NASCAR. Curtis Turner was one who told France to put it where the sun didn't shine - Curtis didn't drive for NASCAR - I can't remember now if it was permanent or not.

I saw Curtis Turner in his Layfayette Ford in 56 at Darlington. He ran very well - can't remember who won but by then the Hornets had wained. He was ahead of all three Keikhaffer Chrysler 300's-Buck Baker Fireball Roberts [I think] and one of the Flock boys as they lost their brakes, can't remember if Herb Thomas was in a Chevrolet or not-saw hin win in 55 -went the entire 500 miles on a set of michelines.Beer was good too. Our last "horrah" each year before school started the next day0

Thanks for that link. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the
Canfield Speedway albeit in the 60's. Not detailed memories mind you,
just glimpses of the bright colors, noise smells, and wrecks. Oh,and hot
dogs too. Not sure when they quit racing, but the depression era
grandstand still survives as does the fairgrounds that it is part of.
Its my understanding that Canfield was one of the original Nascar tracks
and I believe they raced there Memorial day weekend. My uncle related to me
after I got my 49 that he remembered watching a Hudson win there like
2 or 3 laps ahead of 2nd place. I look foward to someday getting a picture
of my 308 powered 49 in front of the Speed Barn.:)0 -
FYI
Not too far away from Canfield is Sharon Speedway, billed the Oldest Race track still in existence. Sharon had both dirt and asphalt over the yrs and Hudsonites living in the Area recalled seeing the Fabulous Hudson Hornets lap the field on their northern tour. Sharon speedway is currently owned by Dave Blaney, A current NASCAR Driver. They put a lot of money into Sharon's upgrades the last few yrs.....0
