Hudson for sale! 1950 coupe,straight 8

edited November -1 in HUDSON
my friend Ted is selling his car,he lives in Pacific Grove Ca. (near Monterey & Pebble Beach,so you can pick this up when you go to the Concours De Elegance)

If any HET'r are interested in the car they can contact me at: tedparrott@yahoo.com

My cell phone number is 831-224-0061

I will take photos of the car as it sits now and create a Flikr album that people can look at. The buyer would need a trailer or car hauler with a winch and some friends to help push the car out of our yard. I will try to see if I can get the brakes working as they almost failed last time I drove the car which is why it was parked. It kills me to sell it but it is just going to rot in my yard and that kills me more! I really, really want it to go to an HET'r which is why I will sell it for $2800. If it goes on E-Bay it will probably fetch more but E-Bay is a hassle and HET'rs deserve the first shot at it.

Ted"

"Wish I did have some free time, I would have tried to get it running and asked more money :) I'm pulling 70+ hour weeks every week and have lost most of my weekeds off to OT. Plus I have bigger issues to deal with such as major home repairs on tow houses etc.. to deal with. I LOVE this car but just cannot do it justice and it really needs to go to someone who will at least play with it! As far as the brakes go the master needs to be replaced, the hard lines should be done too for safety. I replaced all four wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware etc, and rebuilt the original master and the brakes worked great. I just never got around to actually replacing the master. Last time I tried to start the car about 9 months ago it would turn over, but had no spark, there was power to the coil but I think the distributor may have packed in. I no longer have the time or motivation to mess with it, no time to drive it if I got it running, plus I'm on a kick to really downsize & simplify the projects in my life. I am going to see if I can charge the battery up and check that she will still turn over (I pulled the plugs and shot Marvel Oil down the cylinders last time I messed with it). I'll keep you posted.

Ted"

Ted Parrott Mary mother o god, I finally got the hood open on the Hudson, hooked the battery up for the helluvit and all the lights worked, the radio even lit up and the engine turns over!

could you post the VIN #? The taillights would denote it as being a Super 6 but perhaps it's a Super 8?
  • it's a Super 8

Ted - I've posted a notice about your car at the Hudson 8 website in Yahoo.

Does it have overdrive, and is it a '50 or '51?

    That's an awesome buy!
  • NOT overdrive,3-speed column shift.

    thanks for the repost!
  • Thank you George for posting the car. I have just registered on the site so can answer questions directly. The car IS a 1950 Super 8 Club Coupe, the tail lights are the original & proper lights for this car. The car is a 3 speed/non overdrive car. I am going to be away until next week but will take a load of pics at that time of the car. There is some rust in the front in the usual place under the A/door pilar on the outer frame rail, there is some rust at the back drivers side corner just above the bumper (this is the trunk floor seam area). The interior is shot but all the door panels are there and I have all the headliner bows etc. The kid I bought the car from was going to chop it so ripped the headliner out of the car. I have an original Hudson visor for the car, NOS headlight rings, extrta grill parts, most of the stainless trim (it needs to be straightend & polished). I used to drive this car around town all the time so it should be a runner again with a little work. Anyway I'll put up a link to a photo albumn next week with loads of shots of the car. It is a RARE, RARE car ans they made less than 1000 Super 8's in all body styles in 50. When I was a member of the HET club there was only ONE other Super 8 in the club register and it was a 4 door in Europe! Hope someone will buy this car and give it the love and attention I can't.

Thank you! It is a 1950 Super 8 3 speed non OD car. I believe I have a set of NOS pistons, distributor and some other rebuild items for the 254 CI 8 that come with the car too.

Yep a rare model and body style I'd pick it up and give it a good home if I was in a position as well just for historic preservation reasons.
  • I have a deposit on the car at this time, and a second right of refusal if the first deal does not go through. I will keep this thread updated. Sounds like the car will end up with an HET'r and that warms my heart!

    Aaron-

I agree. It would be nice to see this one restored. But, I wasn't quick enough on the draw and ended up "2nd Right of Refusal".

They only made the Super 8 in 3 body styles. Sedan, Club Coupe, and Brougham. I've never seen a brougham. My guess is that for close to the same money you could have a nicer loaded Commodore 6 rather than a stripped down 8 and they just didn't sell so well. Then by the time they came out with the Hornet you could get just about equal horsepower as the 8 in a more modern engine. Makes sense that Hudson discontinued it I guess but I still find it an interesting car.

Aaron - For your infomation, the Super 8 was a less expensive car than the Commodore 6, and the horsepower was only 128 as compared to the 124 on the six. The Hornet hit the market in 1951 with 145 horses, and with the special equipment available from the parts dept. could have been as much as 165 HP.

Thanks for the fact check jetman. Wouldn't they have started selling the '51 model year in 1950??? I also heard a rumor Hudson deliberately underrated the horsepower of the 6 so they could keep selling 8's. Anyways with an only 4 HP difference I could see why someone would go with the engine with more modern engineering.

According to Butler you could get a Super 6 Sedan for $2105 or $84 cheaper and it had the new larger rear window for more visability. Hard to say what factors would've swayed a Hudson buyer then, but Hudson only made 1074 Super 8's that year seems they pretty much decided to phase them out.

Butler states for super 8's price was $2189 sedans and 2152 broughams...does not give a price for coupes.

My 2005-07 roster stats show there are only 38 Super 8 models of ALL years they were made in the HET club.

And if it does not go "down under" or to Russell it will be comming to Utah. Funny how fast these cars sell when they are a good car at a fair price? Let me see, where can I find another "june-bug?" Quack Quack....
  • For those who wanted to see photos of my Super 8 Coupe, as stated before there is a deposit on the car and back up offers at this time. here is a link to my album on Flickr.

whom ever bought this car i have a set of very nice fender badges that have super 8 , very nice chrome. let me know if interested on this forum. thanks:)
  • Hudson308 wrote:
Are they NOS? I think Hudson made more badges than they did cars to put 'em on.

You are dead right on that one, one of the first things I found after I bought the car was an NOS set of Super 8 fender badges, they are going with the car. The one thing I was NEVER able to find was a Super 8 glovebox plastic badge. I guess Hudson thought that the Super 8 would have a high incident of front end accidents!

So what's the story on this car? Is it going to Australia? I was sure hoping it was coming to Texas!

The car is going to Australia, and I'm the buyer, Ted has been great to deal with. It will head off to Long Beach Ca shortly for shipping to Brisbane. All being well I should see it mid to late May, I'll post a photo when it gets here.

And on a slightly different tack, if you are offering a Hudson for sale in the US and you get a buyer from Australia, don't panic. (I know most of you won't, but some may think its just going to be all too hard.) The process of selling a car to Australia is little different from the sellers point of view to dealing with a buyer across the other side of the US.

ie make sure you have received clear funds, make sure the Hudson gets loaded onto the transporter OK and wave it goodbye. The buyer will look after all the export and sea freight details.

Sounds like it's going to a good home then. Wonder if there's any more 1950 Hudson Super 8 coupes or any broughams at all in the US.

The '50 Super 8 Coupe has arrived. Its been a little over 3 months from my first contact with Ted to having the car sitting in my shed in Australia, not bad going really.

Again good to see it went to a good home. There are no 1950 Super 8's listed in the HET club 2005-2007 roster. I have only seen one outside the club (a sedan) and missed the chance to buy it myself. It is quite possible the 1950 Super 8 Brougham is an extinct animal assuming Hudson made them. If you restore it I'd love to hear about your progress.

I've recently learned that there is a 49 Super 8 Coupe down here. It was imported over 30 years ago and spent most of that time in various storages. It has recently been restored and is back on the road.

And here it is with HUDSON LEGEND Clive Gibson in the drivers seat.
