1941 replacement instrument lenses

Guys, I am new to the forum. I think I can make replacement instrument lenses for our 41's. But, They would cost in the $40 range each lens. I need to know how many people would want one. That way I can pay for the tools to make them. Otherwise it would be too expensive to make just 1pc. I want to start with the glove box door lens first to see if there is interest then I could make all 3. What do you guys think?

Are the lenses curved or flat ?
  • Curved same as originals
  • I'm sure some folks would want the lenses... Do you have a prototype and what would be your minimum order to be profitable? Are you having the lenses made or are you making them yourself?

What I need for my '41 is the gauge graphics (translucent film). They are all deteriorated to the point of no return. I plan on attempting to draft out and lay up some replacements and see if I can get them reproduced in film as soon as I have the time. My lenses are OK but could use some polishing or replacements.

BTW, do you have any decent gauge graphics that you would be interested in selling or could you copy a set that I could use as a mock up? I'd be happy to pay you for them (or the copies) and postage...

    Thanks,

  • I'm already a member but, thanks for the info. I was just trying to replace my lenses and was trying to get an idea to see if I could get the price down enough I could afford my own. I also have the problem with the transparent gage faces. I drew them up in CAD last night. I want to see if I can get a printer to make me some at a reasonable cost. A labor of love is correct. Luckililly I am a decent engineer and can draw any auto part and have it made. Trouble is my cost. Or the time to make myself.

I may be able to come up with someone who could shoot the cad file and make some film contacts (positives). Would you be interested in sharing that CAD file? I'll have to find a program that I can read it with to print it out. I do have some engineer friends with CAD and Microstation who could help out. I also have a friend that has a shop that makes data plates for government equipment that could possibly shoot negatives and make film positives. I was a cartographer in a past life so I am familiar with lay out and photo lab work...

  • HOTRODHR,

I just filled your inbox with drawings. I have not dimensioned them I would think they are going to need scaled to the machine that prints them. I can give you about any format you need or make the dimensioned drawing. Please share your results. I have several hours in making the model. I have attached a bitmap I hope eveyone can open. I have not added the locator notches so they can be fine tuned after printing. And disregard the crosshair they won't be on the actual part.

  • Jeremy8, If you happen to be able to make the dash indicating strip under the lenses I'd be interested in them for the 41. Just let me know what you want and I would gladly pay. Mine are toast and I've been looking at every hobby shop and nothing even comes close. I was able to clean the lenses with plexiglass cleaner and they came out pretty good. I'm just worried about replacing the clock piece. Looks like the hands have to come off and I hate to mess with it because the clock works good. Jim
