Jim Guinn is the best there is. He has transported stuff from Texas to Canada for me. Top notch every time.0

Please, under no circumstances do business with any carrier that cannot prove to you that they have insurance that will cover your vehicle in case of accident or damage! I learned the hard way. I hired a carrier based in New Jersey to transport a car from Virginia to California. Long story short, there was about $10,000 damage done to the car (banged around from improper tie-down, brake fluid from car above dripped on it, abrasion damage from a dirty car cover, etc.) and I called the owner of the company to discuss the situation and was told that they were self-insuring and they did not have any type of policy currently in force. He asked me to send him 3 estimates from shops that I would like to use to repair the damage. I called about a week after I had sent the damage estimates, as was unable to get him on the phone then or for the next few days. When I finally did get him on the phone he immediately took the offensive and said that he didn't agree with the estimates, and didn't really feel that he really wanted to pay anything towards the damages! He then invited me to sue him and hung up.
A call to my attorney revealed that:
1) I would have to sue this idiot in a New Jersey court, necessitating hiring a New Jersey lawyer
2) By the time everything was said and done I would probably spend more on the whole process in legal fees that just paying to get the car fixed out of my own pocket.
So that's what I did. I ate the loss and learned a hard lesson.
Make sure you demand an insurance certificate from the carrier. Make sure it is in force (not expired) and has the proper coverage. If you need help, call the insurance company directly, explain your business with the carrier, and ask the representative to confirm that your car will be properly covered. If the carrier gives you any problem about furnishing a certificate, RUN DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THE DEAL.
I should also mention the the carrier I used is well known and has run full page ads in Hemmings for years. PM me if you want to know.

Niels: I second the recommendation of 51HornetA. I know there are dozens of folks who frequent this BBS who have had the opportunity to have Jim Guinn transport thier cars. Jim has made many trips from Texas to California taking cars from seller to new owner. He hauls one car at a time.
Best method to get ahold of Jim is via his cell phone 940-389-8997.
- Corrected my fat fingered cell phone number....:o
What did you buy?0 -
Hi I have used Jim several times. His correct number is (940) 389- 8997. He is honest and DOES have insurance.0

HI:
For what it is worth, before I had my car transported from Detroit to Washington.. I CALLED MY REGULAR INSURANCE CARRIER and had them add the Hudson to my Policy.....I was VERY SPECIFIC that I wanted the entire car covered top to bottom for ANYTHING that might occur.
There was an incident when the car was loaded and I called my carrier immediately. They told me to have the car delivered to their Authorized
Repair Shop and to have that Shop submit an estimate of damages.. They would pay the full ammount..I carried NO deductable.
Long story short......No damage and as soon as the car got to my home I cancelled that policy.. Think I was out less than $50 for the entire experience0
