Hello All, Does anyone know what the material is on the inside cover of the air cleaner as shown in the attached picture. It looks like burlap. Can it and sholud it be cleaned? If yes, any suggestion on what it sholud be cleaned with?

Hi,
I don't believe it is burlap. I think it is the same material used in the crankcase air intake (cover on the tube where you add oil). In the past I have rinsed those with kerosene or gasoline until clean and poured a little
30W motor oil in sloshed it around and drained it out again.
I assume this if for an oil bath air cleaner, right? If it is an oil bath air cleaner you may only need to rinse it. On my 67 Ford pickup the oil in the cleaner bowl was just in contact with the filter material in the lid and it was wet by the oil once you finished servicing the air cleaner and put the top back in. The next destination for the air flow is over the oil to catch the finer particals of dirt.
There should be a oil fill line on the metal bowl or bottom of the air cleaner assembly.
The crankcase breather is the first/only line of defense for the crankcase and wetting with oil traps as much dirt as possible.
Someone else may have more detail so wait to see who chimes in next. I personally believe that the oil bath air cleaner is the best system ever made, as long as it is maintained properly. Throw away filters are easy to service so they seem to have have won a place in most every thing made today. Take a look at small industrial engines and you will still find oiled foam air cleaners. Cheaper than a full oil bath air cleaner but again very effective if serviced properly.

Drew,
The air cleaner isn't the oil bath type. It does have the copper mesh around the inlet on top which is oiled and let drain prior to installation. I bought this air cleaner to replace the one on my car. I was told at car shows last summer that the one on the car when I got it wasn't OEM. I'm in the process of cleaning this unit up.
Thanks,
