Horn Relay

On my 53 Hornet the center terminal of my horn relay is connected to two wires. One comes from the battery, but where does the other one go?

Jim, as I recall, the center terminal is the one that takes a "bullet" connector. In any case, the terminal that takes a bullet connector is the one for the wire coming out of the bottom of the steering box (from the horn ring or button. The other wire that doesn't come from the battery goes to the horns. If there's no bullet type connector on the relay, put power to the wire coming from the battery and ground each of the other terminals momentarily, one at a time. The one that makes the relay click is the one to the horn ring or button; the other is to the horns.

Yep.. Just what Park said.. The horn switch provides the ground that causes the relay to actuate and energize the horn.:)
  • I still cannot get the horn to work. I have the power on the lower terminal, the ground from the horn button on the center terminal and the load on the top. If the load is not connected then I can hear the relay click. When the load is connected, there is no click or horn. The horns work when connected directly to the battery. The relay came from NAPA and I have tried two of them with the same results.

Try reversing the horn button wire and power supply wire connections to the relay. Having those reversed would produce the symptoms you reported.
