12 V Overdrive

Do you really mean the voltage regulator, or is it the "big cube" overdrive relay you're referring to? There's a good way to wire the OD that eliminates that overly complex '41-'49 relay. It involves changing out the kickdown switch for the '50 and later type, which has four terminals instead of two. The later kickdown switch is available at NAPA, part #ECH OD6284; about $15. Your original big OD relay is replaced with a simple one, either a '50 and later original Hudson type, or with one of the little 1" black plastic cube types that the parts houses sell for use with driving lights, etc. Get one rated for at least 20 amps.
E-mail me at hetpwald@comporium.net (remove the het for actual address) and I'll send you a diagram, or go to Ken Cates' or Dave Sollon's pages for my 12v conversion notes, which include the relevant info.0 -
I think he is talking about the input power to the 49 relay that prevents the relay from working unless the engine is running and the regulator contacts are closed. I agree with park. Simplify the system! The system park references works very reliably..BTW, I have been running a 6 volt solenoid for years without any problems. I have a jumper from the two outer contacts on the solenoid. The internal contacts take power off the first or engageing windings when the solenoid is energized and just leave the holding windings in play.0
