Hi,

Here are some pics of the clean and painted engine and chassis of my 37 Hudson Eight Custom Touring sedan model 77.

Using a mask, safety glasses, and cap I looked like Mike, on Dirty Jobs after cleaning the "original' dirt and grease. The car was remarkable , no rust holes anywhere, it was a NY,IN,and MI, car for most of its life. Rustleoum makes a product that neutralizes rust and also is a primer, it works well. Its color is close to chassis black. Next to do is install all new wiring

    Hey Jim,

I used Rustoleum silver engine paint and for the bottom side of the car I used Rustoleum Rust Reformer.

    Both availble at Autozone.

The paint went on very well. The Rust Reformer neutralizes rust and is also a primer. I liked that it works in one step , instead of two as other products require.
  • Thanks for the feedback 37cts. I will use that on my engine which I'm ready to install in my 41. Jim

Sheldon, I see that you have a windshield wiper bottle, so I assume you're using the 1940 wiper stanchions with the accessory nozzles on them (?).

What kind of switch are you using to activate this? I have a glass bottle and bracket (same as yours) and the squirter nozzles on the stanchion, for my '37. But I haven't figured out what sort of button to use. Are you using the original Trico accessory button (whatever that looks like) and do you know where they can be purchased?

Jon, I don't know what Sheldon's using, but there was a factory washer kit for the earlier cars that included nozzle assemblies, which required drilling about a 3/8 hole in the cowl for each one, ahead of the windshield. I found two or three of these kits in Herbert Bell's spares stock years ago. I have one of the kits, intending to put it on our '47 C8.

The longtime owner of the car, Del, used a extra 37 H knob on the washer to harmonize with the other knobs on the instrument panel.

The upper knob is for the vacumne clutch. The lower knob is the windshield washer. This car has two chrome sprayers mounted on the cowl. The washer switch is probably one that came with the kit. The switch has a chromed star washer and pushes in to operate vacumne that causes the sprayer to work.

Hey Dr. Doug, Dave and I put 10 hours in today on this "Rusty Ole Hudson", Dave is doing such a nice job , I bought him Lunch and Dinner.

After all day of putting in new wires, only about 5 inches of it shows.

    All the rest is hidden.

If I ever do this again, it would be easier to metroplex the wires and use computers on the Hudson! LOL!

Sheldon, you are getting off easy. I am just finishing up wiring of the English Hudson. I could not find any type of wiring harness that would work, or was even close, so it was built from scratch. I also wanted to hide most of the wiring. The work completed before paint and assembly was almost 40 hours. Now that the process has moved on to making everything work (this includes extra brake lights, turn signals and some minor other additions) there is an additional 50 hours. When I left the shop last night everything was up and running with the exception of a power (battery) cut out switch that I have added. It has been quite a learning experience and from now on I think I will stay with the simple factory wiring harness. They are so much easier---wait, I still have the 39 Hudson Martz Roadster to do...... no rest for the wicked?

Here is a shot of some of the wiring, We only had three segments made up by YnZ, the rest is all made by Dave. I wonder how this was ever done on a production line.

Keep thinking of "Meatloaf; Paradise by the dashboard lights"

  • Thanks for the new picture Sheldon. That first one made it look like I took a 10 hour nap under the dash Saturday, along with two meal breaks !! LOL!

Well..........as they say, good help is hard to find.
