Need piston set for 232 engine overhaul - HELP

Back in August I pulled the original engine from my 52 Pacemaker and sent it off to a local rebuild shop for complete overhaul. Don't worry I have heard all the recommendations about local shops not knowing what they are doing with Hudson engines... this shop has rebuilt many engines before, including Hudson. I have located most of the other parts and fittings, but I am having trouble finding a good, reputable source for 6 pistons (size 0.030). If anyone has a good lead/recommendation on pistons - let me know. Thanks.:D

P.S. - Yes it was late 2007 when I last posted about thinking of pulling the engine. I have not given up on this original engine.

I dunno if it would help you but I have a 1950 and a 1951 Pacemaker block. The '51 block has a cracked head but the rest of it should be fine.
  • Thanks - but I was looking at new pistons. Complete overhaul with intact block... I will most likely be talking to Dale Cooper about a set of new pistons, but thought I should ask around for other opinions as well... I appreciate the info and the offer.
    Take care.

The pistons that Dale sells are great reproductions. Also,if you have access to a 262 crank, you can change your engine from a 232 to a 262. So ordering a set of pistons for a 262 instead of a 232. crank and pistons are the only difference. Just a thought
  • Yep - been down that road of pondering the upgrade to size 262, but I wanted to keep the original engine rebuild as original as possible. The extra power would be nice, but restoring the original 232 without upsizing the pistons is a standard that I am sticking with. Thanks.

I have used four sets of Dales pistons over recent years with no problems..The personal attention and service is a bonus..

Kevin, the bore in a 232 and a 262 -[3 9/16th's] are the same, just the piston pin location is different. This is why you only need a 262 crank and when ordering piston, order them for a 262 instead of a 232. You will have a numbers matching block ,but have a 262. Rods,cam,valves,springs,etc.. all the same parts. Of coarse the carb.is a 1 bbl.,but you could rejet it to the max. These are just some thoughts before you purchase pistons.

Just a thought that has been talked about in detail here on the forum and one you should give a lot of serious thought too. I would not use "pinned" pistons in a rebuild. My choice is solid pistons with slotted rings. Would not be much of an expense and it would double the life of your engine.
  • I just now talked with Lester Harris , Minden Nevada . PH ; 775-267-2559 . He said he has some .030 over 232 pistons . Everything I've bought from him has been priced right and you won't find a nicer guy than Lester to deal with . I don't get any kickback or anything , Lester is above that crap, but let him know I sent you in turn for the good service I've gotten from him . BUD
  • Thanks all - I will ask some questions about the pinned vs. non-pinned.

Ditto what he said about Lester being one of the good guys. Lester sent me a set of NOS '29 Essex pistons, rings & wrist (gudgeon) pins all the way to New Zealand before the check got there. All on the basis of a phone call from a guy halfway round the world that he didn't know!!! :D:D:

    Remember he doesn't do email.
