New Zealand Hudson
Hi, Just got my Super Wasp on the road for it's first drive on NZ soil. It came out of New Mexico and was a propane twin H car, yes Propane. It came with the original carbs and some shortened 55 twin H aircleaners. I had another set of 55 aircleaners so have fitted those to the reconditioned carbs, also recnd. the fuel pump and had to seal fuel tank. Replaced wheel cylinder and serviced brakes, replaced all fluids, greased etc. Anyone got any advice on the clutch fluid, I want to change it as the clutch does not feel right. I have been told to use a 50/50 mix of kerosine and 30 wieght oil. I did the sign writing by hand with the help of a friend. I marked it out with a wax pencil first and then did it all with a brush, just as it would have been done in the 50's. She went pretty good on the first run so am looking forward to putting some miles on it on the road and would like to try her out on a dirt track to see what it must have been like to punt one around. Would have loved a Hornet but with our exchange rate it would have been out of reach for me, so I apologise to all the Hornet owners now. Some one on the H.A.M.B. suggested I put some pics of it on here as you might get a kick out of it.
Regards Mike.
Regards Mike.

Hi Mike
Great to have another Wasp on the road in NZ. Where abouts in NZ are you? PM me if you need info about the NZ HET Club.

G'Day Mike,
Clutch fluid. Go and buy yourself some dextron 3 Automatic transmission oil, drain and refill with 1/3 pint of ATF, if it shudders it needs a drop more, if it slips usually too much, good luck with your car looks great

Automatic transmission fluid works well in Hudson clutches. Les Pendlebury will probably be along soon, and he can tell you what variety to use.
As regards the feel of the clutch, if you are referring to how it takes up, the wet clutch won't take up as hard as a dry clutch will, its just the nature of the beast.
Edit. I see Les has been along already.0 -
Just a suggestion, when I painted the lettering on mine I outlined the letters with a contrasting paint. I used a 1/2 inch lettering brush and it added a bit of "glitz" to the lettering.0

Congrats on your car! It looks like a lot of fun.:)
How about a look at the engine?:)0 -
Boy, these Hudsons move around!
This car has moved several times in the past year. Bought by a Hudson collector in NM it was moved there by Jim Guinn. Later it went up for sale on eBay where it sold. Apparently Mike in New Zealand is the lucky eBay buyer.
Have fun...0 -
Mike:
Please let us know when you have finished "punting" around a dirt track, hopefully you'll be the only guy on the track! Until then none of us will be sleeping well at night --- worrying about you wrecking that fine old Hudson!!
Better yet, just nix the dirt track adventure altogether so we can all sleep!

Hi Craig , I have a friend here with a 53 Chrysler New Yorker that has a Hemi with dual quads that was actually ordered for the Mexican Road Race in 53 but was never raced, hence its survival, it has only 28,000 mls on the clock and we have a showdown arranged on the dirt to see which is best. Don't lose any sleep though I think he will back out of it first as his car is a lot more valuable.0 -

I managed to get in touch with the guy that bought the car off a used car lot in California in 83 from a business card I found in the glove box of his wife. His name is John Gillam and he converted it to propane. I would be interested to know anymore about its history.0 -

Although I have it on the road its not legal yet, I have my Cadillac plates on it at the moment so won't take it to the beach hop. It's first showing will be at the Hot Rod Blow Out on Easter Sunday as I am a traditional car guy. Don't know if you plan on going there but if you do look me up.0 -

Not guilty Bob, I have a Model A Coupe with a 56 Olds in it and a 4 speed toploader, definately would not use a Toyota trans and the quick change I have is not for sale.0 -

G'day Mike,
Back again, what ever you do don't use any ATF put out for Ford automatics as the boiling point on that ATF is not suitable for our useage it will cause slipping when it gets hot, I found that out years ago by accident.I have used Dextron for 40 years with no problem, BUT, the quantity is the clue . 1/3 pint.0 -
Thanks for the advice Huddy42, hope I can get it here.0

walt's garage-53 wrote:Walt here; Why don't you install the correct fluid in your clutch? Contact Doug Wildrick at hetdrdoug96@comcast.net it comes in 6 ounce bottles. Drop the het. Windshield wipers park towards the center, as I noticed you have the cables crossed, and this will be trouble after awhile. Great looking car, but if you run the dirt, remove that windshield outer visor or you will have a bad windshield after the dirt collects under it.
Thanks for the advice Walt, I have actually taken the wiper vac unit off its mount, because it is a short wheelbase car (SuperWasp) the wiper vac unit fouls the rear aircleaner. I was told that the Twin H short wheel base cars had a modification to the rear aircleaner. I would love to see a pic of an original one if anyone has one. I don't have wipers on any of my cars as I use Rain X so am not to worried about having it disconnected. I have a friend over there that has been giving me heaps about removing the visor as the race cars would of course never run them. I do like the look with it on though. We probably don't see as many of them here as you guys do.
Cheers Mike.0 -
