Looking for drum specs..

OK, so I took my drums to my local NAPA to see about getting them turned.

They dont have specs back to 36 to know if or how much they have been or can be turned to.

They dont think they can do them anyway due to being steel.

Anyone have the specs on 36T drums?

Any ideas on a machine shop here in the Pacifiic Northwest that could turn em.

Or have a set of 4 NOS stashed away!!:D

    FYI

    Someone may have the actual dimension but If not, and if the drums are still a real thick surface, a Shop could turn them a few thousnds to make them concentric & smooth again without concern, since your not going to try stopping from 100mph....Plus All the drums ive seen are steel even the few Aluminum Drums I seen have a steel surface.....

    I would try another local shop to resurface them...

    The 1936 started hydraulic brakes. Terraplane 10-1/16, Hudson six 10-1/16 and the Hudson 8's are 11-1/16. All are Alloy Steel and can only be refaced at 0.003 at a time, which should clean up in 2 cuts. Must use a carbide tool bit and all they use is steel. Get your drums out of that shop and print this out and take with you to another shop and show them. Walt.

    Yeah, but with the advent of disc brakes how many young fellows in shops today have even seen a drum brake???? :D

    Alex, you hit it right on the head. Most say drum brakes. All they know is cast iron rear drums on new cars and will ruin your drums with the tool bit they use. Read above story about a rebore on a 37 212 block. No need for carbide tools today. Walt.

    Okay Walt, heres another question for ya.

    If they are 10 1/16 drums is that what they should measure across in diameter?

    I dont know if they have been turned before or not so that would give me a base to work from.

    The size is when car was new. Read to center of the lining area and start with 10-0625, 10 over size will be 10-073 and so forth. Those drums can be turned safely to 80 over, or 10-1425. Just make sure they take only 003 at a time and sand paper before they are removed from the machine. Front drums have to be the same size so they heat up the same and no chance for a side pull. Walt.
