Primary and secondary shoes....
This is probably a no brainer but,
I always thought the back shoe was the primary one on drum brakes and the front one was secondary. Is this correct?
Does it matter on front or rear?
The manual doesnt make it real clear either.
I have a set that I am putting on my 36T and they have 'primary' and 'secondary' printed on the shoe, and they are different colors.
Thanks!
Jeff

The front shoe is the primary one. The primary shoe gives more braking effort, because the toe of the shoe contacts the drum in the forward direction, and is thus moved in to the drum surface (called servo action). On all Hudson hydraulic brakes (Bendix type) except for the Jet, the two shoes are likned together, thus the servo action is spread through both shoes. On the Jet, the shoes are floating, but limit against a fixed peg at the bottom, and only the front shoe gets any servo action.0

Too have a good brake pedal, star wheel and anchor bolt must be adjusted any time you install new shoes. If you have my tech tip books, go to volume two (2) and turn to page 15, and follow the instructions and your pedal will be right there. If you do not have my books, try to borrow it from someone in your area.
Walt, where can I purchase a copy of your tech tip book? I'm working on a 37 Terraplane.0 -

BTW, those early Terrorplane shoes with the secondary cams are the same shoes as used in 46/7 sans the cam hole, which you can drill. Auto Zone lists the 46/7 shoes in their computer, and mine had them on the shelf.0
