1950 Clutch sticking
Hello everyone, I have a 50 Hudson that has been sitting for sometime. I have tracked the cars ownership to Al and Mike Saffrahn and Dick Sheridan. The car is running again but the transmission clutch will not disengage. I am new to this tranny so I could use a little help. Mike indicated a fluid that might be able to be added to the flywheel that could free the clutch. Could anyone direct me on the fluid and procedure? Phone numbers are welcome. Thanks. Gary Gould

A universal problem for Hudsons that have been sitting, and nothing to get worked up over. You might want to drain the clutch to see if there's any oil in it, to begin with. If not, add some, and "work" the clutch (and leave it to set for a few days to let the oil penetrate the corks). If it still won't work you can try using a solvent.
Here is Ken Cates' Hudson Step-Down page: http://hudsonrestoration1948-54.com/
Follow the links to CLUTCH, or go here and scroll down about 2/3 of a page:

Clutch fluid is available from Doug Wildrick or the H-E-T Club Store, or you can mix your own. For the solvent formula see Ken Cates' section called FLUSHING CORK CLUTCHES.0 -
Thanks Jon, After placing the post I did migrate over to the site and found the supporting documentation. I will try it and hopefully get this old car back in service after years of sitting.
I was impressed with the history and 56 Twin 'H' motor Mike and Al put in this car. It really runs well and hopefully will perform well. It is a unmolested and very complete, with options, Commodore.
Thanks for the support and assistance.

Since we are on this subject, I also have a problem with my '50 Commodore. Also had a stuck clutch, and freed it up with the great advice found here last year. Can shift and drive car in first gear and reverse with no issues, but it will grind when you try to get it into 2nd and third. Now, does anyone know what is causing this and how to rectify it? Does the clutch or transmission linkage need adjustment?
Have all the shop manuals on this car, and some friends have been kind enough to help with a car lift and elbow grease.0 -
I think "grinding" when shifting is more of a shift-linkage issue and not the clutch. But I will be the first to admit that I have only done one tranny so far and had the clutch done by Dr. Doug Wildrick.0
