Question on pulling engine on 36T.

Hey all,

For those that have pulled the engine/tranny whats the easiest way? Pull both together or just pull the engine? Does the tranny have to come out first through the floor?

Richard: which way did you do it?

    In my '37 I pulled the whole thing at once. I will assume that the '36 setup is similar.



    I removed the nose and radiator, which made it a whole lot easier. I used a engine hoist on casters, and I was able to do the entire operation myself with no help. It's a lot easier to detach / attach the bellhousing / transmission when the engine is sitting on the shop floor. Also, in my case, I have an overdrive transmission which has very little clearance and is quite difficult to remove otherwise.

    Jeff, I completely agree with Jon. Take off the beak and the radiator and pull the whole engine and trans out through the front with a hoist.



    If you only need to remove the transmission, it is possible through the floor but it is not an easy job, I have done it - twice!



    If you are pulling both the engine and trans do it through the front in one piece. As Jon says, it is much easier to take the engine off of the bell housing when the whole thing is out of the car.

    If you really want room, take the fenders off too. I did that on a '36 I pulled the engine out of. I took engine and tranny out together. Lot easier. Once you pull the radiator and grille, at minimum, you got a ton of room.

    Thats pretty much what I figured as far as the nose and radiator goes.

    Wheres a good place to hook on to it at? And also how does the gearshift lever come out? I took out the bolt and now it just turns but doesnt seem to want to come out.:confused:

    Jeff, to get the gear shift lever off of the transmission, you have to remove the 4 bolts on the plate that holds it on to the transmission and just pull it up. However you first have to remove the floor pan and snake it off over the gear shift lever. You need to remove this anyway to get access to the clutch, transmission mounts, etc. All of the stuff that has to be detached. Be sure to use a digital camera and take notes. It is easy to forget how it all goes back together. Some stuff fits on backwards, but it doesn't work very well!!

    HA HA! Thanks Richard! I have done a couple of the 'works backwards but not so good things' myself! :D
