    Great article - New England would have been a great place for a ruggedness run. Even as late as 1934 paved highways were still scarce - especially in Maine, Northern New Hampshire and Vermont. Massachusetts and Connecticut were better, but still had a lot of unpaved roads in rural areas. Not sure about Rhode Island, but I suspect they weren't much better.



    Of course many states, particularly in the south and the wide open areas of the west still had many, many un-paved roads. It really wasn't until the late 1930's and early '40's that paved highways began to be more common, particularly in highly populated areas.
