1920/21 Super Six cooling

Just taken the cylinder head off a 1920/21 Super Six which someone else rebuilt recently - there are 2 large corresponding water passage in the head and block. The two in the block have round metal inserts with a 1/4" hole drilled in the centre. Are they suppose to be fitted as a means of restricting cooling water flow ? My first experience of SS engines - so any advice greatly appreciated.

    Yes, these plugs ae fitted to stop the water from surging up through these holes, which are casting holes. The other holes are much smaller, and the restriction forces the water all round the block, rather than straight through, thus ensuring greater distibution of coolant and more even cooling.

    Thanks for confirming my initial thought. I can now fit the cylinder head.
