brougham/coupe door questions for a '49

Okay....I'm calling on the Hudson Nation again for some answers if you're so ablidged :)

I'm looking for a passenger side door front garnish moulding for my '49 brougham (I'm assuming the brougham and coupe are the same but would like to verify that). Also, what other years would have this same part (I know a '48 is the same, but are the 50+ years the same too??).

I would actually consider buying an entire passenger door since mine is rusted out on the bottom and has a couple decent sized dents in it that don't look too easy to straighten (again, are the brougham and the coupe doors identical? It seems to me like they would be, but I'm not sure about the area up around the top of the window). How much and who might I contact for a coupe/brougham passenger door??

I also need the complete window crank mechanism for the driver's side (would this be common to the 4-door crank mechanism or would I need to find a 2 door specific crank??)

If I can't find a passenger side coupe/brougham door for a reasonable price, I was thinking that I could cut the bottom off of a 4 door door and weld in place onto the bottom of my coupe door. I know the coupe door is longer, but I may be able to use enough of the 4 door door to get me out of the woods since the rust on my door is mainly at the back half. Has anyone grafted a lower portion of a door?? I've looked around the forum and haven't been able to find any threads about this.

Many thanks in advance!!!

Lee

PS...Just made reservations at a place in Idaho near spokane so I can attend the National meet!!! Pretty exciting to have this in my "back yard" this year :)

  • Lee the entire coupe and brougham door range from 48-53 will interchange. As noted the vent window mechanisms and trim will be different model to model but the door itself will interchange. The window crank mechanism will only interchange with another coupe/brougham door from the same side. These cranks are unique to coupes and will not interchange from left to right ,unlike the rear quarter window cranks from coupes.

Great.....Thanks for the info guys. Great to know the brougham and coupe doors and hardware are interchangeable.

Hudzilla...thanks for the PM about some parts....I just replied.

So...has anyone tried "patching" the bottom of a 2dr door with a 4dr door??

    Thanks for the help!!

    Lee-

Keep in mind that the front or leading edge of both doors will be the same as far as curvature. The 2Dr's will be different at the rear of the door. If possible, try and keep the portion you cut away from the 2Dr. door in the same relative spot for the replacement from the 4DR. Hopefully, the back end of your 2DR. door will be the good part and the 4DR. replacement can be fit into the front portion of the 2DR. Wow, that's confusing. Pictures would be so much better in this case.

Butt welds will work if you are patient. Use water-doused sponges or rags 5-6" away from your joints while welding to reduce panel warpage. Also, best to skip around back and forth with a series of spot-welds until completed, rather than running a single bead. Plan on using lead back in your joints for longevity.

    Call me if you want.

Okay....thanks Russel. It all makes sense and seems pretty do-able. The 4 doors seem much more plentiful and I think I would have a much easier time finding one that's maybe damaged on the top with a good bottom. My 2dr door is repairable, but it would take me a long time, so my first option is to try and find a good one and circumvent the repair process. If I end up repairing it, I'll certainly post some pictures!!

    Thanks,

    Lee
