Help with 20 Sedan Wood Split Rims

Need some advice on 2 problems with my wood spoke'd 29 Hudson Sedan.
1) Appears all 5 split rims are welded to prevent separation. On the spare I removed weld from pivot from locking pivot. There are 2 slots on the side opposite of the pivot but the pivot piece has nothing left to insert into the slots. Any close up pics out there of the rin split area?
2) Cant get the tire/rim off the hub. First attempt of removing one of 2 flat tires finds the rim with tire refuses to come off hub. Can get the front part of rim almost clear but the back part of the rim will not clear hub. I want to check for advice before I get the crow bars out.
Thanks for any advice
Jack

1. Get my DVD from David Young on how to change split rims. HETdavid@websters.co.nz (leave the HET from the address). This shows how to unlock the rims and change the tyre. It is the last item on the DVD, the first few show the other type of rim, which is a peg-and-hole lock.
2. There is a small slot opposite the valve. You need to get a large screwdriver in here and lever the ridge of the rim over the felloe of the wheel.

Hi Geoff,
I've already paid and am waiting for the dvd. I jumped the gun a bit when the new inner tubes arrived thought I'd replace the tube in the spare since it was trashed at the stem. THis was my first exposure to the welding down of the pivot. THis is the one I removed the weld from to find the 2 slits in the rim but no fingers in the pivit to lock down.
I saw the slot in the hub. I was working that and was successful to get the front side of the rim off the hub but the back just would not give. THe hub was getting hung on the pivot of the right front rim which is also welded. I guess I get a few crow bars and begin to carefully work it off.
I would have thought that tire replacement should have been relatively easy. If you get a flat the idea is just get out the spanner and pop one off and install the spare. 5 nuts and you're back in business! My bubble is burst!0 -
But,.....but pull the entire tire, rim, hub and bearings! Is this changing a tire!!0

Changing a tire on an Essex wooden spoked wheel is simply undoing & removing the 5 nuts & associated clamps, pulling off the rim with attached tire from the wheel & reversing the procedure with the spare. Sometimes you need a bit of enthusiasm/persuasion to get the rim off the wheel.0 -

I keep a rubber mallet in my tool box for this very purpose - gentle persuasion!

I completely agree. 5 nuts and clamps and bing-bang its off. Been there done that... Rim front is off but back side refuses. Ordered 24" pry bars. I'll have to coax it off with that "pursuasion".
Then I want to slap the person who welded the pivots down!0 -
All,
Reveived Geoff's DVD. I see the use of the breaker bar to work the pivot lever.
Now, my rims have the pivot lever welded down so the pivot lever doesn't move. I removed the weld on one side rim finding the end part of the pivot level to move freely but the other part of the lever that should connect to the opposite of the rim to be gone. What remains in a dowel piece through the lever just to the right of the breaker bar insertion point.
There should be 2 arms that connect to the dowel and to the rim.
Does anyone have a closeup pic of this part of the pivot rim. I can reproduce them and weld them down but I'm not sure of the original design.
Thanks
