I am putting a 55 motor in my 52. I just want to confirm that I need to change the oil pan, as it looks totally different.

It is different. Up to 54 the oil sump is at the back end and in 55 and 56 the sump is in the front end. Had to do that to clear the cross member in 55 and 56. And the 55 and 56 pan will not go in a 48 to 54 engine. Bolt pattern is the same so no problem here. Walt.I am putting a 55 motor in my 52. As Walt said,it bolts right on. The oil dipstick is located differentlythough. I usually pipe tap and plug the "Hash"location, then drill and install the adapter in the back of the block. The block boss where you drill is NOT as tall as the step-down block so you have to make a slight mode to the level on the stick. Maybe Walt has a Tech tip for this?.0

Also of note is that depending on what transmission you are using you may need a crank spacer to account the the shorter crankshaft in the newer engine. I ran into this using a 55 motor and my 53 automatic transmission.

To add a little about the crankshaft mentioned above. If you are putting the 55-6 engine in your stepdown, change the crank from the 51-54 in it. This makes any combination work with "standard" parts:)0
