Anyone compared these new mounts for stepdowns to the original round type?

Are they built better?

Looks like the AMC mounts. If you want those, they are around $12 at Napa. Make sure you get tow that match though, they are interchangable but not identical (thickness, thread etc). I have been using them for a few years with no problems, aside from finding two that matched.

The last pair I installed had to be oriented properly to prevent metal to metal contact. Unlike the originals that didn't have a front or back. Easy to see when you place them on the frame..if you look.

Hey, Dave; What 2 parts were touching with the mounts in wrong?

Good question.. Not sure I remember. I slept since then !!.. LOL.. George Heisler brought his 51 Commodore to me. He tried to install the front mounts and only got one on.. The left front. The other would not line up. I found the front plate was bent slightly. I managed to get it pulled into alignment but had to rotate the left mount 180 degrees to keep it from binding on the engine plate( cross member). The other one was the same. Worked in one position but not 180 degerees. I honestly don't have a clear recollection but I think the Mounts are not completely symetrical. Maybe someone else will pick up where my memory left off. Getting old is not fun, but it beats the alternative.:D

I've been curious what the advantage is with this square mount over the original round unit? Is cost the only reason people are using these?
  • I'm running those, they work good.
