With sincere sadness, I hate to report the death of everyone's friend, HET member and long time enthusiast, Wayne Wherle of Pittsburgh. Wayne died today, Tuesday, June 1. I will post funeral details when available. :(

    Got to know Wayne when I lived in Pittsburgh in the late '70s. Heck of a guy and he loved his Hudsons, which he had stashed in various garages in his neighborhood in Carrick.

    I'll never forget him driving his '46-7 PU on the Transcontinental Run following the National in '67 (?). For those of you unfamiliar with that trek, most of us drove from Indianapolis (or was it Huntington, Ind.) to Buena Park, Calif. (some people joined en route, a few others, like Wayne, drove further as he lived in Pa.).

    I, along with wife & pal, drove a dilapidated '33 T8 sd. (with part of skirt broken off one of the pistons) which my buddy had found in a junk yard on the east coast & which he got into running condition for the trip. Details too long & complicated to relate here, LOL! It was smoothest at 45 mph so that was our cruising speed for approx. 2000 miles & it used exactly a case of oil which is what John bought before leaving Portsmouth, N.H.!

    Oh well, "long time ago in a galaxy far away", so to speak.

    Visitation for Wayne is Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at Readshaw Funeral Home, Brownsvuille Road, Pittsburgh (Carrick). Funeral is Friday morning.:(

    I first met Wayne a few years back when he was doing what he loved best - playing with a Hudson.

    I was west bound on I-80 in Pennsy and as I came off the Bloomsburg entrance ramp I found myself next to a Hudson on a trailer, on my rleftt. I was able to come up alongside the trailer and tow vehicle and and gave the passenger a wave and a shouted "I"m HET myself" - tho I don't know if he heard me. It was Wayne in the passengers seat - I don't know who was driving.



    I later met him at a couple of Nationals - great guy to talk to with a lot of Hudson stories.
