1941 Wiper Questions

A friend has a '41 Hudson with non-working wipers. Not having a '41 myself, I would appreciate some information so I can offer it to him:

1). Assuming the vacuum wiper motor is the cause of his woes (and who wouldn't assume that!), must the radio be removed in a '41 in order to remove the wiper motor for rebuilding?

2). Is the linkage a rigid metal arm, or a cable (as in the StepDowns)?

3). Strangely, his entire wiper on-off knob and linkage is missing; someone rigged up a bent coathanger to run the motor! Does this interchange with a '42-46-47 linkage (even though the plastic knob itself may be of a different design)?

4). If the answer to (3) is correct, does anyone have the (on-off) linkage for sale?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

  • 1) Yes, the radio must come down but there are only two nuts, wiring, and accessory bar to contend with.

    2) The linkage is metal arms attached to the transmissions. I dont believe they are the same as '46-'47. the later model ones can be made to work or you can use the later vacuum motor. I cant quite remember but there are modifications that will need to be done.

    3) That coat hanger may be the correct linkage, it should be held in with rubber grommets. The rod that connects the switch to the motor is made from 1/8" rod. The switch/knob are the same '41-'47

    4) Sorry I do not.

I hope this makes sence and helps, JP
