My guess is it is for installation of a reversing light.

I got a 1948-1949 overdrive schematic from a Motor's auto wiring diagram I can scan and send you. It shows a six pole something or other down in one corner.
Drop me an email @ NEChudsontech09@yahoo.com (drop the NEC) and I'll send it along.

If the switch is on the back of the transmission, It is the reverse lockout switch. And yes it provides a ground for the relay, and removes the ground when the tranny is in reverse, so the car can back up. If it is on the side of the transmission, It is for DriveMaster or Vacuum Clutch and is not needed for the OD circuit..unless you have one of those options..0

Thanks guys,
I have the old motors manual and that is where I finally found the wiring for the 6 pole relay switch, but I really appreciate the offer.
What I have is a ground switch on the passenger side rear of transmission, it runs to another switch on the driver side rear, then the shifting solenoid. there are 4 wires coming from these in a harness to the 6 pole switch with one going through the kick down switch.
What stumped my wiring project was the one terminal switch to ground found about center of the transmission on the driver side and it looked as if it was never used. My thought was if Dave is right, to go ahead and run a fifth wire down in harness and use it for back up lights.
In looking in old manuals the back up lights were a dealer option and wired to a on and off switch in the car. I think a relay or wired like a dome light would be a cleaner install.
What's your thoughts?
Thanks,

Glen, if it only grounds when you're in reverse, sounds like a winner for backup lights, but the manual says it's grounded in all gears except third. Check it out in the other gears. Its original purpose was related to the vacuum clutch that was part of the Drivemaster and Vacumotive Drive systems. It permitted the automatic clutch to disengage when you let up on the gas in 1st, 2nd and reverse, but not in 3rd. Obviously you wouldn't want the clutch to release every time you let up on the gas when in high gear.0
