Question - installing K-GAP trunk weatherstrip

I have already installed the K-GAP trunk weatherstrip once and it did not turn out well. I followed the lines of the original factory weatherstrip but had a lot of gaps especially around the bottom of the trunk. Adjusting the alignment of the trunk did not help. It appears that the weatherstrip needs to be moved outward toward the edge of the trunk to get a good seal. Any thoughts on this? Have others had trouble getting a good seal with the KGAP strip?

What year are you working on? On my '36T, I was informed by KGap that the weatherstrip goes on the trunk, not on the car. On step-downs I believe that they go on the car, not the trunk? If you call Dany Spring (late mornings CA time are good,) he will give you pointers on how to do it.
  • Thanks for your response. My car is a 54 Hornet Special and the weatherstrip does go on the body. What bugs me is that KGAP sent me two different weatherstrips for the trunk. The thicker heavier one supposedly goes around the top and half way down the sides and the more narrow one goes around the bottom and up the sides. Where I am getting the gaps is where the narrow one goes. Makes no sense to me to have two different weather strips but that is what KGAP said. ? ? ?

On mine, the strip on the trunk lid from KGap has gaps at the extreme curvature only but with time and compression around the whole strip, I expect the gap to close. I have a '54 coupe.

Did KGAP send you two different thickness' of weatherstrip?

No, only one piece of equal thickness. It's glued to the trunk lid.
