Fun little story of a guy who learnt to drive in a 28 Essex. I like the part about using a candle stuck to dash to defrost windshield.

The candle defroster was a hot idea.

I couldn't help chuckleing when he left his date as colateral.

I remember the little fan, with rubber blades, that attached to the steering column. You pointed it toward the windshield to defrost it, the idea being it would blow heat from the lower part of the car coming from the heater. Worked pretty good. This was on a 1936 Chevy that Dad had around 1940 or 1941. That gave way to a 1937 Chrysler, which had a defroster built in.

I learned to drive stick shift in my Hudson! Thank heavens it's a forgiving car. :)

I believe I still have one of those little rubber -bladed fans with my dads

stuff up in Ohio. To the best of my recollection it came out of one of his old

trucks and was vacuum powered. Thanks for the mind-bump! It was one of my

toys growing up in the 60's
