cam question
I am replacing a cam in a 49 262 motor, I notice i have what seems like too much
play from front to back. When i have the cam in and the flange on the front of the motor in. My questing is....what is on the rear side of the motor that the cam goes into? Could that have pushed out towards the rear and now i have too much movement?
thanks for any info you may have.
**original trouble is the cam gear and oil pump gear are chewed up.
***it move in and out about 3/16th of an inch.

Don't the camshafts have thrust bearings either at the front or the back, which take up the slack?0

FYI
The front flange, gears, and chain are the only retainer for the camshaft...At the rear is only a Soft Plug.....
Not an expert in gear wear, but recall many people that are knowledgible saying certain yr Hudson oil pump gears were not compatable with the cam gear resulting in the wear problem described. (and not slight horizontal movement)
Suggest buying a Bronze oil pump Gear from Randy Maas, (21stcenturyhudson.net) and if cam worn perhaps consider one of Randy's new street camshafts for little performance gain...0 -
yah im guessing that soft plug worked its way out some.
I wonder if i can thread that hole?
Im testing it without the oilpump gear in place. Just the cam installed and the retaining flange on the front of the engine.0 -
The cam and oil pump gears for early Hudson stepdown motors were both steel. The gear on the oil pump was changed in later production engines to brass or bronze to cut down on the wear out of cam gears.
There are no thrust washers in a Stepdown six cam, albeit the eight does use a fiber rear thrust washer. When checking the cam in a six the front thrust plate should be bolted in and the cam gear installed with bolts. This is the proper operating configuration minus the interfit to the oilpump gear. I just looked at the mechanical procedures manual and found only an endplay clearance measurement. That specification is .003 to .005 inch.
The soft plug should have nothing to do with the camshafts lateral movement the design using the front thrust plate sets this specification.0 -
Ok i think you found my problem, I dont have the cam gear in place now....so i bet if i put that on it will take up some of that movement. Cool Thanks for your help.
you guys are awesome on this forum.
