Terraplane blocks,are they the same?

Are the blocks and cranks the same on the 34 to 36 terraplanes? I believe they change in 37 but not sure.

    1934 started the 3 inch bore and was the start of the 212 engine. 36 to 38 was the same but in 39 they made an improvement in the oil system which remained till 1947. If possible, use an engine from 1939 up just so you have the best oil delivery system. Up to 38, oil to the front was sent into the timing cover, and 39 it was sent to the front of the block into number one connecting rod oil tray. This was to stop the number one rod from burning the babbit going up a long steep grade. Walt.

    1936 were small port engines, 1937 were the start of bigger port blocks.
  • I should explain my question better,the 36 block i have has issues,small crack between the water ports ,couple of broken studs,.020 oversize with another .005 wear.The head is fine,and the manifolds are good,so what i want to do is chase a good block that i can use my 36 head and manifolds,and an excellent crank that came out of a 34T.If i use a 37 up block does this mean i have to change manifolds,cut holes in the firewall etc,none of which i want to do,or are all blocks for the 212 interchangeable?

    '34 and '35 blocks are the same, with longer studs in the centre row for the ridged cylinder head, which has the pump mounted at the front, and the water jacket inlet at the bottom. '36 was a one-off, with the same small-port (round holes) exhaust, and a flat head with studs all the same length, and the pump mounted on the front of the block, and the water jacket inlet at the top. '36 - '39 were large (oval holes) exhaust, but the heads and pumps are the same. Not sure of the exact change-over, as we never got any here, but at least from '41, the blocks are different, and use a different camshaft, with the distributor sitting on top of the head at the rear.

    At a pinch you could use a '34 -'35 block in a '36 by changing the head studs and water jacket, and re-mounting the water pump on the block, or else use a complete '34-'35 block, head, and pump, and alter the plumbing accordinlgy. Any '34 -'47 engine will interchange as complete unit, but if using the top mounted distributor models you will have to relieve the firewall to accommodate .
  • You do not want to use a motor newer than 1939 they have the distr. on top instead of the side like earlier engines. In 1938 they took the shims out of the rod and main bearing caps using full babbitt no shims. You might want to touch base with the fellow who posted he had a 1936 engine for sale here it might be in your best interest in the long run Chuck G
  • So,it seems that you can use a 37/38 block as long as you change the manifolds?

    So far i have an excellent 34 crank,a good 36 head,a good 38 head,a poor 36 block.

    Should i do my block,lose my head,or just blow a gasket?LOL
  • Hey, lets throw another iron in the fire! You can also use the engine block from the 175 engine as found in the 112 Hudson line just use your 212 crank, rods, pistons gives you more to think about. You might just want to call the fellow who posted he has a 1936 engine for sale and save yourself some grief. Chuck G
