Cure for gas fumes inside car?

I have a 51 Hornet 4dr.

I have gas fumes inside the car.



I think I read in WTN years ago of the cause & cure.

I think it had to do with the gas filler or the vent tube on the tank.



Can anyone shed some light on this?

    I can't remember which Hudson sage told me this originally, but nevertheless,



    To address this problem on my '49 sedan, I've added a piece of (I think) 3/4" heater hose that attaches with a hose clamp outside of the gas filler box to the drain stub that comes out the bottom. Then, I took it back to inside the rear bumper and using heavy duty cable ties lashed it to the LR bumper bracket. Essentially I'm just moving the tank fume exhaust back to where it can't get sucked into the trunk. You should be able to pretty well hide this from sight. This works for me. Doug

    Walt here. If you have my tech tip book volume one (1) go to page 31 and read on how to cure gas fumes in your car. Do as written and you will be OK. K-gap has the parts you will need.

    Another cause of the problem may be a leaky fuel pump. The fuel pump I originally put on my '50 was a rebuilt unit from the mid-80s. The rubber used was not alcohol resistant and it eventually started leaking and you could really smell it in the car when the windows were up!
