Good day: I have a customer here to restore a Hornet from 1954. He wants us to repair the hoses to the convertable top. Question is what type of fluid did they use for this hydraulic system? (Brake fluid or some type of ATF / Hyd fluid ?

Back then we used brake fluid and never had a problem. Walt.

Thanks Walt - this is a little embarassing for me as this is something I should know and can't remember. The old CRS syndrome. I thought brake fluid would work.

One caution ... never, never put SILICON brake fluid in the convertible top system. I has no lubricating qualities and will ruin the pump. There's a big note on this from Hydro-Lectric. They recommend power steering fluid if you're starting with a fresh, dry system or have thoroughly flushed it.
