Right off the top of my head I can't remember for sure but one either the front or the rear has to have the trim strip in place before installing the window. I'm leaning toward the front windshield but I'm sure some one will chime in with the right info.
Sorry, but I had to box up all my hudson books and they are in the attic. So I don't have access to them without going thru every box in the attic.

Just had my rear window on my 54 cpe extricated and replaced, and yes the stainless has to be on the rubber before replacing the gasket backon the car. Don't know about the front, but it looks like the same procedure to me. 54's have full front and rear glass.

To save yourself torture, you may want to do what I did with the stainless on the back of my 49 Commodore. I tried the string trick and all it did was cut the old rubber. Might work with new rubber.
I cut the old rubber that is supposed to hold the stainless off with a knife, then ran a good bead of 'Seals All' around where the stainless is s'posed to go, then ran another bead in the stainless, and stuck it on there. The stuff goes on white and dries nearly clear, and comes in a tube for your caulk gun. The stainless is still on there 6 years later.0 -
I have made old hard rear window rubber temporarily soft and flexable, like it originally was, by painting it with DL Hand Cleaner for several days. Eventually the rubber turns hard again but by then you should have your molding installed.
