dating terraplane/hudson engine block
recently bought what i was told was a 37T engine block,it looked to be the same as another i have, but upon cleaning, found the engine number stamped on top of the block, and not corresponding to my list(which could be faulty)of TP numbers. The number is 8154297.
Is it possible that this is a 112,or another hudson?the inlet and exhaust ports date it to post 36,being larger and oval, but i dont want to go any further in this rebuild if its not a Terra.
Any info greatly appreciated, that number again is 8154297
thanks

The "8" puzzles me, unless it means the motor was built in August 1935 - otherwise that engine number could belong to a 1935 block. Engine numbers in 1935 ran from103,000 to 155,564.
In 1937 motor numbers started at 250,000 and in 1938 at 360,000. The 1938 Model 112 motor number started at 28,566 - I don't have numbers for 1939 up.

Dont think its a 35 block as the ports are the later oval type, another 37T engine i have has the number stamped above the water jacket and that number corresponds to the book, this one doesnt have a number above the jacket, but is stamped under the head,on top of the block.0

Then the only thing I can think of is the whole number is a later block, between 1940 and 1947.
As I say I don't have engine numbers, yet, (anybody got 1940 up and prior to 1930?? - drop me an email if you do) so can't say for sure. I'm working on finding the numbers - research continues.

Skipsker & Alex, I've checked thru all the info I have, and I can only think that the engine block in question may have been a replacement block for the '37 thru '39 cars with the distributor on the passenger (right) side of the block or cylinder assembly as they called it in the parts book. That would explain the lack of a number stamped above the water jacket. Just a thought!0

Just measure the stroke that will tell you if it's a 112.0 -
If it is a 112 block you can still use it with your 212 parts. Also a 1940 - 1947 block would have the distr. at the back of the block instead of the side mount. Chuck G0

To measure the stroke,do i just measure the whole inner wall of the cylinder?I just have the bare block,no rods etc.0 -
Also, not sure if the numbers cast on the side of the block help,i have a 36 with38136,a 37 with121836,and the mystery motor 51138,just to confuse things further. all have 152500 on them. the dizzy is on the side,so it predates 1940,and the ports say post 19360

38 Terraplane serial nos were 81101 thru 8156140 according to Chilton's 1947 manual. These were 3X5 [212cid] engines. should be the same as the 37 6 cyl engine save for the serial #. The 81 at the beginning of the # is the car model #, in this case 81 which is the 38 Terraplane.0
