Still looking to borrow a set of Hudson racing decals from a plastic model. I'd like to take them to my sign shop and have them reproduced in fullsize and put them on my 51 Hornet Coupe. Thanks!

Are they going to be permanent or magnetic decals? If the full size reproduction wasn't hundreds of dollars I'd buy a set while you were at it. I guess I could put it on magnetic stock myself.

Grab yourself a paint brush (or get a sign painter as I did) and paint your own graphics. You can even make up the text if you want to send a special message as I did with my "Salt Flats Racer." Be creative--there are enough "clones" out there and if you visited the racing photo's post you noticed that there was no shortage of creativity with the race group of days gone by......
  • Brownie,

I don't want to paint on the graphics. I want semi permanent stickers made that can eventually be removed. Most of the labor and cost of creating these is in the computer design and artwork. If I give a set of premade decals to my guy, all he has to do is enlarge and print them out. This dramatically reduces the cost and produces sharp looking graphics.

Maybe I'll contact Franklin Mint and see if I can get a set from them???
  • Brownie, What color do you call that green? I need to repaint and though abour going to a little darker green. My 54 is currenly Palm Beach green.

I you have a formula for it could you send it to me.......

Is there a specific sponsor or era you're looking for? I've got a few leftover scraps, but most of the decals from the 50's only have graphics like scallops on them. Speed equipment sponsor decals really started to explode in the 60's with drag racing and NASCAR kits.

Best case, I'm looking for a decal sheet that one would find in a plastic model car kit.... like that of Marshall Teague, Dick Rathman, Tim Flock, etc.
  • If you can wait a couple of months Moebius is producing a model kit of Marshall Teagues Fabulous Hudson Hornet. I am sure you will find the decals in this kit. Here is the link.

This link shows the molds from the kit. Pretty interesting. I am going to order 4 kits so I can paint them different colours and make my own race cars.

I saw these, thanks. Lots of anticipation from the modeling community. This certainly won't hurt Stepdown values....

When I painted the Hudson I used a custom mix. I know that is not the way we restorers are susposed to do things but I hated the green poly that was original--it looked like a pickle.) Saw a nice Sea Mist Green at the national this year. The owner said it was stock color (it was not--it was too nice). Back then, it was always my practice to keep my mixing combinations (I used Ditzler back then) in a book just in case I had to do any touchup. When I mixed the paint for the Hudson I changed to paint mix the day I painted to add a bit of a grey tone and to add metalic. When I sold the Hudson (about 18 months back) the paint formula was in the book that I gave to the new owner. Bottom line, I do not have a mix combination for the car. I did last year paint a trunk lid for "wall art." I took a licence plate that I had left over down and had a computer match made of the paint color. It is around 98% color corrected. If you would like me to take that down to the paint shop and get a match for you let me kinow.

  • I'm with Brownie,

Paint it like they did in 50's, I am biased, but it's only paint and stickers ( Lightning Mcqueen) just ain't the same. I know your car is a lot nicer than mine though. It's all about doing what you want and having fun.

Your right, it is all about fun. Thats a nice SuperWasp you have there... hard to find. I always am keeping a look out for a nice driver.

Hope you manage to track down some decals, I am pretty happy with this Super Wasp, the paint looks a lot better in the photo's than it is so I was not really stuffing a good paint job by painting on the lettering, would have preferred a Hornet like yours but the budget with our exchange rate was just too much and I really wanted a coupe. Its amazing how they can blow stuff up now with the computer graphics and still keep the definition, I guess thats technology for you.
