Im having trouble pulling a starter from a 51 pacemaker, now i know this shouldn't be this damn difficult but i must be doing something wrong. I found the two nuts one top one bottom and removed them and the starter is loose but i cannot pull it out. Do i have to remove the bendix or what ever its called before i can pull the starter? if so how do you do that? from the bottom side im guessing?

Its on a manual car with a 232 engine, if that makes a deference.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

well if you got the nuts off (that can sometimes be a challenger the teeth might be stuck. if you can wiggle the starter around a bit it should get out past the flywheel. it's kinda heavy at that angle. You shouldn't have to remove the bendix.

Yah it wiggles left and right and i can pull it out till it just about clears the threads on the studs but not enough. Its almost like after the gear on the bendix there is something wider that it is catching on? I will clean the oil and gravel off the block maybe i just cannot get enough room to wiggle it out? not sure whats going on unless theres something wrong with the bendix and its broke and catching on the flywheel.

    thanks for your guys help.

Had the same problem with my truck that sat for years. I cleaned the crud off the shaft with kerosen so the bendix would slide to end of shaft. Then the starter came out.

Whack it with a big sledge hammer. That should do it. LOL

yep that was it, I sprayed the bendix with some WD-40 and pried it out evidently the bendix was stuck so i couldn't get it past the flywheel.

    thanks for all your help.
