Timing Question -- 1936 T 212

This 1936 Terraplane 6 cylinder engine runs fine, but I wanted to advance the timing. It was almost advanced as far as the slot would allow. I since have turned it until the slot will allow no more advance. This gave it more power.
The engine runs fine, starts fine, but it will not ping when pulling at a low speed in 3rd gear. Thus, there should be more advance available by turning the distributor more, but the slot will not allow more.
Is this normal? Or is the distributor off by one tooth?

You say "as far as the slot would allow". I believe you'll find that the slot itself is on a ring that clamps to the base of the distributor and which can be loosened and rotated itself (in any position around the distributor).0
