Problems with overdrive--46C8

The engine and transmission have now been rebuilt by Terry Harkin and Al Saffrahn, respectively, and are now back in the car.

We cannot get the overdrive to engage. My mechanic says that there is a short in one of the terminals of the overdrive solenoid and asks if there is a resistance specification for the mindings of the pull-in and hold-in coil.

I am using a relay like the one Fifth Avenue sells and when the car is driven with the overdrive engaged the fuse on this relay is blown. The overdrive worked fine before the rebuild using the existing solenoid and relay.

Help!!

  • hi there the only time i had troble with the overdrive engagement on my 49 commodore i used to drive was due to gearbox oil getting in to the solenoid housing. i took the cap off and let the oil out and dried off and cleaned the governor contact points ,oily points prevented any power getting to the solenoid and i never had any more trouble -it worked perfectly ;if your transmission has been rebuilt its possible that the internals of the transmissionhave turned with the overdrive solenoid removed thus allowing the blocker ring to rotate so that instead of the pawl being able to slot through the ring gap into the sun wheel it meets the solid part of the blocker ring and is unable to engage.if the solenoid is not getting power check the governor is ok and the points are clean .no power can get to the slenoid until at about 18 mph the centrifugal force onthe bob weights in the governor close the points and allow current from the feed wire to reach and energise the solenoid.its about 40 years since i last did this job but i think i remember an insulating washer on solenoid feedwire terminal and leaving out that washer would ground the live feed an blow a fuse every time you operate the overdrive knob--worth checking sorry if im teaching grandma to suck eggs but it might just help-regards-- bernard slade
