running hot

52 Commodore 8. I'm looking for some possible culprits to my issues.

The problem really starts when the car leaves the garage. If it's running idle in the garage, the needle stays low (or will take about 15 minutes to reach the middle of the gauge). If I take it out of the garage, the needle will get up to the midpoint in one trip around the block (and continue to creep up if given the chance).
The car has been in a two year hibernation so to speak. A stuck valve lead to replacing and re-seating all the valves. I didn't have a cooling problem before. I have flushed the radiator (top hose disconnected and a running garden hose).
I want to blame the timing, even tho the mark is at the pointer (when the vacuum line is disconnected at distributor).
Who has the antidote?

  • Have the radiator cleaned/ rodded out by a reputable shop. Pull the water manifold off the left side of the block & clean out the accumulated crud. You'll be amazed at how much gunk caqn build up in a cooling system that sits idle for an extended time!
