Jim - That was quick... :D May all your issues go this quickly and well![/quote]

Amen to that! It's nice when it's something simple, for a change.

    Can you fix mine now?

I can take my 53 down the road kick it in and out several times park it then either the fuss blows when i pull in my driveway or when i go to start the car the next time and its blown?

Ive replaced the complete wiring harness for the OD circuit. tested everything We originally found the cap for the selinoid was shorting out. I replaced the fiber washers with rubber washers. Next i will take the cap completely off and drive it to test but other than that i have no more ideas.

Has anyone else had something this weird happen with their OD?

**I was thinking of putting a do-dad switch in instead of the relay sounds like alot of people are doing that. But i tested my relay and seemed fine? so im not sure, its like either a current spike or short comes and goes.
  • Check your rail switch on the rear of the main case left side. Sounds like problem is happening when you shift out of O.D. Switch could be shorting internally.

I did check it originally but i will check it again maybe i didnt catch it shorting out or something.

if that isnt it what else could it be?

The reverse lock out switch is a ground only. It comes from the governor. If you are experiencing a blown fuse and you have a new wiring harness and it works for a little while, your solenoid is probably the problem. Of course I'm not sure ,but this is an educated guess. Also, make sure that the solenoid is installed correctly. The cap only goes on one way and the slot or opening in the cap goes down. This is to allow the oil to drip out and not fill the cap full. Hope this helps. CG
  • If your solenoid is filling up with oil, the shaft seal has failed. The seal is pressed into the adapter plate and the solenoid shaft passes thru it. It's available from NAPA I think and not hard to change. eventually the oil in the solenoid wll act as insulation between the points and it will cease to work. Then you clean everything up and replace the seal!

my gut feeling it is the solenoid What does it take to replace the solenoid? is it a big job? I think we looked at pulling the solenoid but there was a pin internally that we couldnt get to, to pull the solenoid does that sound right?

As Steve E has explained,if the solenoid has that much oil coming out,the seal is probably missing or really worn out. I was just trying to highlight what could be wrong. The solenoid will go on either way, right side up or right side down. The vent or whatever you want to call the opening in the solenoid cap,is there because they all will seap oil thru the solenoid shaft seal, some more than others. I have found this is usually because the solenoid has wear on the inside barrel of the solenoid. I expect a NEW solenoid would have alot less seapage because of less movement or side play. When removing the solenoid, simply turn it about 1/4 turn and put it out. It installs back in the same way. Hope this info helps you, good luck.

No im not seeing any oil in the cap what so ever im not sure how we got on that subject..haha.. but i cleaned the cap the first time i took it apart and now it still shines.

But i didnt know about the 1/4 turn thing. i will give it a try and hopefully find another to atleast test with.

    thanks
