Bob
Bob, I backed up all my PM's this way.
Go into P M's & choose either "Inbox" or "Sent"(I get into PM's thru the Welcome message)
On the line that says "Messages" (just underneath "Date") check the box to globally select ALL messages (boxes) in your chosen catagory ( In or Out).
Then move your curser to the bottom of the window on your screen & choose the format you prefer for the saved file via the "Download all Private Messages as". I chose "Text" to enable me to read the messages in either "Notepad" or "MS Word" & follow the prompts.
You will need to choose a folder in which to store the PM backup & you also have the ability to name the backup file to a more relevant name as part of the process.
Sorry this is so wordy but it's really easy once you've done it & quite logical.
Good luck0
