The engine will lack factory serial/code number. Numbers were stamped by dealer supplying the engine and don't follow factory sequences. Blocks and component parts were produced from '52 (?) through '54. Top of engine should have an iron head and 1/2" studs (all '55-56 308s had 1/2" bolts). The '56 engine was basically a rough 7X.0

When you ordered a 7X engine, all you got was a block with 0.030 overbore and mains and rods, ten under, 0.010. All other parts were shipped to the dealer or the factory repair shop to have them installed. They could not do an engine like the guys that were racing Hornets. Those engine in the cars had the serial number of the chassis. If only engine was ordered, it came with no serial number, and who installed it was suppose to stamp the old engine number on the block, which most never did. Walt.0
