I bought a 1952 Hudson Hornet Friday that was advertized on North Las Vegas Craigslist. It looks alot nicer than the owner Elliott Myserson discribed it to me. I drove it home form there to Burbank, Ca. On Tuesday. Had a couple of glitches on the trip home. The generator light came on and the brake peddle got lower. Stopped at Perry Spring's home in Ontario, Ca. to check the problems. Added brake fluid to a near empty master cylinder and changed the generator brushes. Checked the charging system. Turns out the new voltage regulator is malfuntioning. It suddenly started working again. On the way home from Perry's,it turned dark and the dash lights stopped working and the radiator started leaking around the seem between the top tank and the core of a new rebuilt radiator. I removed the radiator today to get it fixed.

I fell in love with this car when Elliott opened the garage door. And I've been having a ball driving it. The engine runs very smooth and quiet. I have received more attention in one day with this car than I have receive with all the cars I have owned combined.

Our plans are to drive it to the Laughlin Economy Run next month. The Hornet averaged 15 MPG on the 318 mile trip from Las Vegas, NV to Burbank Calif. at speeds ranging from low of 60 MPH to a high of 85 MPH. Hope to better that gas mileage average at the economy run.

The engine number 7319078 is not a match to the vin number.

Can anyone tell from the number what it is? The head had 308 on it.

Extremely late production - last production numbers, October 1954, ran 316251 to 319720, so only 641 made after the one your engine came out of.

And congratulations on your buy. Buying the car, then driving it home, is what it's all about. Glad to hear you didn't have any major problems like the tranny falling out in the middle of the freeway. I'm not sure I'd be up to driving 85 in a car I really didn't know much about, tho. :cheer: Would have 50 years ago when I was young and did crazy things. :P

  • Hi Lee,

I was also interested in that car. You beat me to it! Elliot had mentioned some rear peremeter rust... how bad is it? I think you got a great deal on that car and parts! Niels
  • Yeah Lee, Let's see some pics!

  • I was also interesed in that car...When my good friend Ken Gates emailed me letting me know car was almost located in my backyard, I immediately emailed owner same night for his contact information, early next mornng received reply and was informed Hornet was sold already...BTW it was Ken who informed me about Rudy's Black Beauty Hornet that I purchased same night I learned about it; best Hornet I ever owned.

That is one sweet Hornet. Look forward to seeing it at laughlin in a few weeks. I will have my "new" (I have owned it about six weeks now) 1950 sedan there--if I can get the bright work back on by then.

My computor quit. Got it back today. Glade to be back.

Nick, Dave, Alex, thanks for the engine ID date information. Is it now a 160 HP engine in my 52 Hornet with a late 54 engine?

Alex, I'm still young at heart. It runs so good, I couldn't help my self. I had already put 100 miles driving around Vegas before heading home. I was prepared to call a club member with a flat bed tow truck if needed.

Neils, You got the Red and Black Hornet in Texas I was going to fly there and drive it home also. We are even now. He He. Since you buy Hudsons to resell I do not think Elliott would have sold it to you. His first question to me was "Are you buying it to resell". I assured him I wanted to keep it and enjoy driving it because thats the model and year I have been wanting. I'll leave the rust judgement to bent metal.

Ray I wanted that car. I had three friends with computors trying to make contact with Elliot because I was not having any success. One of them made contact and got the phone number for me. Elliott told me there were 3 others wanting it with one comeing Sunday with intentions to buy. I was fortunate to be the first one there. I had purchased the car sight unseen over the phone. I have an uncle that lives on Mt Charleston, 45 minutes from where the car was garaged, and he put a down payment on it for me. My uncle mentioned to me over the phone that if I did not want it he woud buy it for himself. That sold me. I got in the pickup and was on my way to Las Vegas Thursday. I was not disappointed with what I saw when he opened the garage door. I was very happy when I saw it.

An interesting side note. Our CIC chapter news letter arrive a few days before the ad was posted. In the news letter was a photo copy of the request by 16 men to the HET "National officers to grant a charter to a new regional to be known as the Southern California Inland Regional." Now known as California Inland Chapter. Elliot Lee Myerson, the seller of this Hudson Hornet, was one of the 16 signers of that request. Elliott told me he was also involved in starting the So Cal Chapter. Two chapters I am a member of. It was just ment to be, I should become the new owner.

Great looking car you have Ray. It looks better than mine. Will you be at the Laughlin Economy Run? If you do we can get together there.

Brownie, your car is looking good. See you at Laughlin. Maybe Chilton, Dave and I can talk you into taking some pitures of my car at Laughlin and post them on the forum. I haven't been able to do that yet.

If the rain stops tomorrow I will be able to reinstall the radiator and be back on the road again.

I love driving that car. Lee O'Dell
  • Lee - great news, congrats on your new ride. Maybe we can convoy out to Baker for the start of the Economy Run. Can't wait to see it!

Just my luck. I left the pickup in Las Vegas when I drove the Hudson home. I bought a nonrefundable airline ticket to Vegas to bring the pickup back. Today my son calls and asks if I would like a ride to Las Vegas tonight. As my Grandfather would say "dad nab it".

I drove the Hudson home filled with extra parts and Hudson literature. Now I'll fly Sunday to bring back the pickup that is full with more parts. It will be interesting to see what is in all the boxes. And where I'm going to put it all.

I like the reference about driving home with parts and literature - especially literature. :woohoo: LOL Maybe something in that collection would have helped if you had broken down.

I don't know Alex. The inside was all literature from the front and rear floors to the top of the seat backs. What I would have needed may have been in the bottom of the last box on the floor. I barely squeezed my suitcase and me into the car.

I did end up buying three beautiful stain glass windows from Elliott. One is 44inches wide and 34 inches tall in the form of an ach. All stain glass with Hudson emblem in stain glass. The other two stain glass windows are rectangular 38" wide 12" tall. One has Terraplane and the other one has Essex spelled out in stain glass. Stain glass is one of Elliotts hobbies. I was glad to make it home without any damage to them. The large one barely went through the back door of the Hudson and it stood upright against the back seat cushion. Could not see much out the back window. Stayed in the right lane as much as possible. The big one is in the front window of our house now. Haven't decided where to put the other two. Maybe somewhere around the patio?

Niels, you probably would not have bought this car anyway. Having seen the beautiful Hudsons of yours, this one is no match in comparison.

    This adventure is fun.

  • Would love to see pics of those stain glass windows and pics of the car.
  • Hi Lee,

From reading emails you must really be happy and I can understand why,
enjoy your good fortune and I hope to meet/see you in Laughlin.
Unfortunately for me, I will not be able to drive my '52 Hudson which isn't 100% complete yet, however I may drive my '62 Buick Skylark.

Ray, that is a nice looking Buick. However, we ole Hudson folk like to see Hudson's at any stage of their completion. The 50 that I will have at Laughlin is the one that I picked up a month or so ago that was "not good enough to restore" so I slapped a paint job on her and we will be there--missing a few trim parts. So if anyone has the bottom trim parts for the fender skirts or the small part that fits behind the fender skirt bring them along. Might get the car, or leads ot get the car finished while there?

Ray, very good looking Buick. I hope to see everyone going to Laughlin.

A neighbor of my uncle emailed me pictures she took of my Hornet when we picked it up in Vegas. I was able to pass one picture into a Hudson Folder but the other pictures would not go into the folder. I was hoping once the pictures were in the folder that someone would walk me through the process to post them on the forum. I will try again tomorrow to move the pictures.

Or is it possible to send the email with the pictures to someone that can then post them on the forum? If so, what is the procedure?

Any help is appreciated. I do not like not being able to post pictures.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wed I put the repaired radiator back the car. Thursday was a long wait to get it registered and getting Calif plates.

Laughlin is comeing up soon. Since I got a speeding ticket in my AMX due to speedometer error (it had 15% error), I decided to have old Blue Hornet's speedometer checked at North Hollywood Speedometer before the trip to Laughlin. The odometer checked out 100% accurate. However, the speedometer has a 9% error. When Blue Hornet's speedometer reads 70 MPH the actual speed is only 62 MPH. It's going to be hard to get a speeding ticket now. He He.

Now I know why so many cars were passing me on the trip home from Las Vegas.

    Just a little update.

With this new forum it is very easy to post pictures - simply open a dialogue box (where you type up your post). At the bottom is a narrow box marked "Attachments" and on the right "Add File". Click on "Add File" - this open a file list. Simply go to where your picture are and click on them just like sending an email.

I won't go into sizing them - they arrive with your post rather small, but click on them and they get bigger.
