It is with great sadness I convey the news of Chicago-Milwaukee chapter member Dale Anhalt's death last Friday as the result of a car accident. Dale was a great Hudson guy that was currently working on a 1917 7-passenger Touring Hudson. Memorial services are this Saturday in Lake Mills, WI at the Claussen Funeral Home 416 W. Lake St.

Dale helped me out many times and in many ways in the short time I knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Dale was killed by a drunk/drugged driver who came across the median of the divided highway and hit two cars. Dale's passenger was hurt but is okay. The other car's driver was injured. The drunk emerged unscathed. Dale was towing an antique car (make unknown at this time) with his Jeep Commander.
  • I am so sorry to hear this. I sold Dale a Crosley convert 2 weeks ago. I believe he was bringing home a Crosley sedan for parts. Tom Jones
  • Here is the news article about Dale. May he be driving a Hudson to heaven.

One dead, multiple injuries in I-55 crash

    By Pantagraph staff pantagraph.com | Posted: Friday, October 15, 2010 4:48 pm |

LINCOLN -- A Wisconsin man was killed and northbound Interstate 55 was closed for four hours Friday because of a fiery, three-vehicle accident on Lincoln's northeast side.

Dale J. Anhalt, 68, of Lake Hills, Wis., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. at Milepost 132.5, state police at Springfield said.

A BMW driven by Harry S. Brody, 35, of Buffalo Grove was southbound when it drove off the left side of the roadway and crossed the center median into the path of two northbound vehicles, police said.

Brody's car struck a Jeep Commander driven by Anhalt and a pickup truck driven by Timothy J. Kirk, 29, of Bloomington, police said. Kirk's pickup and Anhalt's Jeep, which was towing an antique vehicle on a U-Haul trailer, skidded off the right side of the roadway into the ditch and caught fire.

Brody and Dennis E. Busche, 61, Lake Hills, a passenger in Anhalt's car, were taken to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Kirk was not injured, police said.

Brody was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and improper lane usage-violated median.

Northbound I-55 was closed until about 7:45 p.m. Northbound vehicles were diverted to Interstate 155 on Lincoln's northwest side and directed north to U.S. 136 and then east to I-55 at McLean.

So sorry to hear this. I had corresponded with Dale earlier this summer about some 17 Hudson parts.

It is sad - it is also sad that authorities will not, refuse to, treat these as what they are - vehicular homicide. Maybe if drunk/drugged drivers were treated like the criminals they are and faced jail time in line with the offense it might have a positive effect.

Now, another family has lost a loved one and our HET club lost a valued member. And the drunk driver will most likely, even if it's not his first offense, get what amounts to slap on the wrist - and community service.

    Disgusting.

I work in the justice system in a state with a very high rate of DUI's, and I couldn't agree more. Dale Anhalt was murdered, pure and simple.

It is upsetting to say the least. An idiot that must not have cared much for his life took another man's life due to his careless actions. I unfortunately did not have the pleasure to have known Dale but his loss saddens me. My heart goes out to his family during this tragic time.

I bought "Jethroe" my 1946 Hudson pickup from Dale at the Auburn National sight Unseen! And a more trustworthy deal couldn't be found.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family.

  • I live in the same state as you Sam J and if you think it is bad up north you would be shocked how bad it is down south. It is unbeleivable the dis-regard these people have towards others. People driving with 3,4,5, DWI's and still driving drunk. There was a guy here who was charged with his 9th DWI and received a 18 month sentence that he will only have to serve half of. Some of these people down here are drunk at least half the time they are on the road. How sad that 9 times out of 10 the drunk walks away unscathed while the innocent person dies.

Doc's not exaggerating...it's scary as hell. Example: Recently a guy was stopped who blew .28 (which for some people is comatose). He had his wife and three kids in his truck and was pulling a horse trailer with 2 horses in it. He's back on the road with an ignition interlock (you have to blow in it to start the vehicle.) All he needs to do is have one of the kids blow for him...Eventually he'll kill somebody and get 6 months in the County Jail.

This is sad news. Dale and I exchanged many e-mails about 17 parts. I also ran into him down in OK at the Chicksaw meet for early cars. I do know that his 17 Hudson project was wearing him down. I was trying to encourage him to keep going. There are not a lot of us that really like the early Hudsons and it is sad to see such an engaged member taken from us in such a stupid, tragic way.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
