diff ratios for 36T diff swap
Apparently the railton guys use a 3.51 ratio when they change the standard 4.11 over. The 3.51 is reputably an excellent ratio for a terraplane however i have found an excellent 2.32 diff that will fit nicely, but im concerned about it being too low. Will this ratio suit or should i keep looking?

Skipster,
That ratio would be great if you only drove downhill!!!

Skipster, I wouldn't try anything lower than around 3.30. Otherwise you'd be disappointed with the performance. The 3.51 is indeed a good compromise ... too bad the ROC repro units are so darned costly.0

I put a set of the Railton Club's gears in my '36T and I am real happy with it. If I went to anything higher I wouldn't get up the hill to my house. I don't believe that they are available anymore? They were cheaper than a '40 OD, plus I could keep my Electric Hand transmission. I am rebuilding an Elec Hand unit to put in my "36T as it had one when new. I can go frwy speed with the gearing that I have!0

Besides being too high geared, that 2.32 ratio would have you replacing clutches all the time!0

Yep,thats what i was afraid of.So,i will keep looking for a 3.51 ford diff. There is a diff guy in the town nearby who is prepared to help me put the thing in.Will post my results.
Thanks everybody!0 -
Simon, friend of mine used a complete Holden rear end in his '37 T. About 3.5 ratio, worked fine, but did cut the hill climbing ability, which in Oz won't make any difference as you don't have any hills of note anyway! It involved drilling the Holden hubs and fitting new splined studs to suit the Hudson wheels, and a welding the mounting pads for the springs at the correct distance, otherwise it was pretty easy. The only other thing to consider is the speedo, which you have to either gear up, or allow for reading too slow.

Simon, I contacted my mate and he confirmed that it was Holden diff, but couldn't remember the exact model, thought it was from one of the "H" series. It was only 1" wider overall. Should be heaps of those beasties floating around the wreckers yards over there.0
