Chesapeake Bay Chapter - Need Members Help

[Deleted User]
edited November -1 in HUDSON
I now live in the Metro DC area (Springfield, VA near Lake Accotink Park, can find via Google).

I am in need of some hands-on instruction, specifically, carb adjusting and timing.

I do not own a 6-volt timing light.

Reading the book is not getting me where I need to be.

I'm in the Chapter but unfortunately a good deal west of the Springfield area. I am not the world's greatest mechanic but might be able to give you some advice. If you'd like to e-mail me, I'm at HETdetailed@verizon.net (remove the HET before sending).

By the way, could the car be driven, should you find someone who could look at it?

  • You don't need a 6-volt timing light to work on your Hudson. You can use your
    modern 12-volt timing light.
All you need is a spare 12-volt battery to set next to your Hudson. Hook the
black and red aligator clamps from the timing light to the 12-volt battery.
Then hook the wire to the spark plug like you would normaly.
Presto - you have fooled the timing light into working on a 6-volt car,

  • Timing Light - OK, that will be an expense I did nto plan for but I now know how to get it done.

Driving - not at the this time. I blew the thermostat housing trying to get it here to DC. I would hate to over heat it again when fixing the problem in my driveway before getting on the raod is the better option.

Is it that you simply don't know how to set the timing? Or, are you encountering problems when trying to do so?
  • @ Jon: I am a learner that needs to have some hands-on type instruction to learn skills like this. So, yes, I do not know how to and reading the book is not getting me to level I need to make sure my Hudson is operating at it's best and I do not hurt it any more.
  • In the back of the WTN there is a list of advisors for club members. Maybee you would benifit from speaking to the 48-54 expert about your issues. He may be able to talk you through some things.
I thought you just could not find a 6-volt timing light,

Unfortunately, none of our Chesapeake Bay Chapter members lives anywhere near Springfield (that I know of). I would be happy to show you what little I know about timing a car (as to the carb adjustments, frankly I just make them "from the book") but I am located 1-1/2 hours west of you. If for some reason you plan to be out in the neighborhood, e-mail me and you could stop by for a quick lesson in timing (a somewhat older Hudson product). If you let me know who and where you are, I could alert you if I plan to be out your way.
By the way, if you need professional help on any aspect of your car, we do have three members of the chapter who do antique auto repair / restoration for a living, but the closest one is outside Leesburg.
  • Thanks, one and all.

Leesburg is not that far from here when considerig the Metro DC area as a whole - about 40 minutes in non-rush hour traffic.

I will start revieing the Club Bokk and making some phone calls unless Job B wants to send me th ename of the persons he mentioned above.

No prob. In order of their closeness to you, they are:

Joel Horne, Horne's Garage, Waterford, Va. (540) 882-3573, general repair (keeps my Terraplane running sweet and has about 60 year's experience working on Hudsons). He's on an old farm just outside picturesque Waterford, which is in the Leesburg area.

Paul Rose, Vintage Motorcar Company, 365 Arden-Nolville Rd., Inwood, WV, tel. 304-821-1326. Restoration company with 5-10 employees, does all work from mechanical to body. Paul's actually not in our chapter but a great guy anyway. Has a '29 Super Six. Just off I-81, north of Winchester, VA.

Paul O'Malley, P.O. Box 181, Capon Bridge, WV. H-E-T legend, excellent general repair, very knowledgeable about Hudsons of many eras, and if you've attended any major H-E-T meet you've seen him there. Capon bridge is maybe 25 miles west of Winchester, VA.

For some reason the part of Virginia closest to the Beltway has a scarcity of CBC members; otherwise I know that one of them would love to stop by and give you some advice.
