molasses rust removal in water chambers.

Trying out a method to remove rust deposits from water chambers.
Sit the block level,seal up welsh plug holes with corks if you have removed them.
Put on water jacket,or a flat piece of tin, with boltholes drilled to suit, and
a gasket(or silicone,it doesnt matter as its only a temporary sealant)
Fill from the top with a molasses/water mixture.Some people say 6 parts water to 1
molasses,im using 3 to 1 as this works the best on small rusty items.
Leave it for a week,then drain and check.If it looks like its removed the rust rinse it out with hot water and a pressure hose.,anyone else tried this?
If it works well,its a lot cheaper,less toxic and fun than getting it dipped in some evil acid mix.Downside is that it attracts bugs and small children.

    I had great results with "rustaid" which is
    oxalic acid on my ALUMINUM Clifford head. Tried it on an IRON 30 Essex head and
    didn't do near as well. I used small pieces of foil duct tape to seal the water
    passages and just filled the head thru the top. The foil tape sealed the
    passages and didn't leak at all. I may try the molasses on the Essex head just
    to see.

    DO NOT use molasses on any thing with aluminum content, if in doubt try a coca cola can first, if it's not there when you return there is your answer.

    It Worked! took out all the rust scales that high pressure washing left behind,then i used a dremel with a flexicord extension and a small brush attachment to clear the smaller passages.
    Molasses is an easy,cheap,safe(just dont leave it in too long)option.

    There is now a product called EVAPORUST that works even better than molasses. Non toxic, non acid. Acid products tend to make metal brittle and more likely to crack.

    Googling evaporust gets you 25,400 hits- looks like "on-line" might be the best place to get it, if they don't have it at your local auto parts store.

    I have Google on my toolbar on the computer- its amazing how useful it is, when its handy like that.

    I also used Rust-Aid on a F-Block 1929 Hudson Sedan. I picked up a 1/4 horse water pump, a 10 gallon plastic tub and a few nylon stockings. Got a 3"+ piece of PVC put the stocking inside like a filter clamping around outside with clothes dryer hose clamp, PVC/filter into the tub, filled the tub then pumped Rust-aid through the block, back through the filter for 3 days. All the rust buildup around the cylinders was gone. Took about 7 gallons but I didn't have to take the engine apart to do the cleaning. Also did the honey comb radiator - came out spotless. Flushed with Rust-aid in reverse with Radiator upside down and used a rubber mallot to tap here and there couple times a day to dislodge all the crud. Ran for 2 days.

    I got my evaporust at tractor supply, but it appears that not all of them stock it.

    Harbor Freight sells it. In store price was $20.00 a gallon when I last bought it about 6 months ago. I just checked on-line though, and they are asking $29.99 a gallon, plus shipping.

    im sure evaporust works,but molasses is cheaper,you can get it anywhere,and a kid could mix it.And it works great!Still,some people may find it a bit downhome and not packaged enough.
