What color to paint my Hornet
I'm looking for some input, I have a dark red '51 Hornet with brown/tan interior. The car was used to create a full sized Doc Hudson for the launch of the Pixar movie "Cars". Since when they did the work, they laid fiberglass directly on the car, the car's needed paint since I bought it from them. I'm almost finished prepping the body for paint, fixing the scratches they made, etc, and now have to decide on color.
I have old photo's of the car, and during my work on the car am positive that the original color is this dark red. However, I just love the blue of the Doc Hudson car, and given my car's link to the movie, have been considering changing the color to dark blue. I'm typically more of a purist, I like to keep cars their original color, but in this case, I'm torn.
Blue Pros: Would look more like "Doc Hudson" when I show it & I love the look of Blue on the Hornet. My kids and wife are also voting for blue.
Red Pro: It's original
Certainly the pro's are stacked in favor of Blue, but would this change affect the value of the car? Advice?

I personally think that the quality of the paint job will mean more than whether it is blue or original red. I have seen several blues that I really like, but all were first class paint jobs.0

It's your car and of course yuor investment. If you like the blue that's fine, But, what is the paint code for the car( should be on the upper right front door hinge)? If the number is not visable, than no one can hold you to an non original color provided you paint the hudson with an original blue color such as Bali blue lower & Pacific blue on top ( code 67) or a choice of a single color Neptune, Pacific,or Admiral Blues. If the numbers are visable 2 maroons nad Toro red are available. What is the color of the interior. Get a paint chip booklet. You see, the next owner may be a purist and the resale price may be improved. But, whatever you choose, have a quality job done, and one that reflects the era,ie, not a "wet look", like some modern cars. You and the next owner will have to look at it for a long time.0

FYI
I would go with the eyes of the beholder, meaning its yours, and you along with your family love Blue so let that be the color.
Regarding value, being the template for the actual Pizar 'Doc' Hudson it may be more valuable Blue than an original color. If mine, I would make a poster with before & after pictures since there's a Doc' Sequel Movie coming out next yr....0 -
Oh hell. Listen to the family. I don't think you'll go wrong either way.0

If you have the car I'm thinking about, it was originally a Hollywood? Assuming you left the fiberglass bodywork on, then the car isn't "stock" so I wouldn't worry about the paint color as long as it looks Hudson original color ish. If it were mine, I would want to capitalize and document the car's association with the "Cars" movie. This will make the car more interesting to many at a car show, and when you go to sell it, you can market it as part of the "Cars" movie franchise. People pay alot of money for movie memoribilia. I'd go with Doc Hudson Blue and put on the racing numbers and decals.0

Amen to that and ditto what nhp1127 said, also.0 -
No, I have the red sedan. The yellow Hollywood that you're speaking of was painted blue with the racing numbers/decals. I have pictures up on www.dochudsoncreator.com0

Nice looking sedan and I like the color. I'm typically a purist and I think a stock car with stock or "could be a stock color" do best. I don't think making a Doc Hudson replica out of a sedan makes sense. My two cents, use color that you love and that you think others will like. You always gotta think about if someone is going to like the color when you resell it. I think its nieve to think that "I'll never sell this car".0

Defiantly paint it blue with the Graphics, you will be onto a winner there LOL
When they bring out the new movie there will be someone out there that will pay big bucks because of its history and having it documented
Put a call out for Jay Leno LOL

And don't forget that a kid who is ten now will be thirty in twenty years from now and may be wealthy as well...And desperately want your car...:)0

I too am about to repaint my 51-had it done few years back and looked good for a short while. When problems arose I got out of the recliner and entered the Bodyshop program at the local CC.In short,I learned how to do it myself. Took it down to the bare metal-looked like a DeLorean-fixed all the mess underneath and made many, many patch panels to include rebuilding the lower section of the headlamp openings.Even reinforced the MonoBody frame where time had taklen its toll.
I am going to blow the door jams tomorrow as i did the fender -door and quarter jams and then reassemble all panels, doors, hood and fenders.I choose neutral black in all the hidden jams and openings with the exception of red fender wells and powder coating the dash.Color is yet to be decided but one thing is for sure-I have done ALL the work and blown self etch,epoxy,2K hi build, base and clear.
If it looks like crap so be it - no one to blame but myself. The effort was painstaking and lengthy-over a year-but worth every minuate

What body style are you working on? 2 dr or 4? Did you flip it over and clean the bottom? That what I'm planning on one of mine. Sounds like you have the experience and knowledge to help us want-a-bees out. Send pics and thanks for sharing. Bob P0 -

To me one of the best things about our Hudson followers is that they can fall in love with a Hudson no matter what you do to it. Just got back from the Laughlin meet and I saw a bunch of really neat cars there. Some were 100 percent original with age wear and stuff (1919 Hudson) and late Saturday evening he loaded up and headed home some 60 plus miles driving after dark... Now that is Hudson spirit.
However, since we are talking about painting one's own car I have to add the photo of the one that I had at Laughlin. Most of you have heard me talk about it before. The paint is fresh and as stated above--did it myself (not bad for a retired rocket scientist?)The car was originally white--however, the red is from a 2010 Camaro and the trunk is white because I liked the way it looks. Key is--as Rick Nelson said: "You can't please everyone, ya got to please yourself." That's my two-bits....0 -
Carrol, as Rick Nelson said: You can't please everyone--so, you have to please yourself. This car was white--now it has GM paint including 2010 Camaro Red, with a non standard paint job...0 -
My 51 is a C-8 cpe bought it from Park Waldrop in 2005. Did NOT put on the schools rotissery as the engine etc is fine and did not want to remove the running works.I did lift her up and clean the bottom -especially the frame area as there was some rust through issues. What welding I did not do I conned the welding class into doing for me-their metal also.Lot of talent in the Community College crowd as so many people are grant seeking to supliment unemployment and a two year degree helps. My role out there has developed into a coaching job for those who are a bit slow to catch on.Not much money but keeps my hand in it,for instance today i removed a countershaft-filed and reworked over at the machine shop next door "low/rev" and actually got it back w/o the needle bearings falling out -old 54 two lever tranny-good opportunity to see what made it "Tick" Like I said beats hell out of the recliner and walking in the mall0

I would do it in blue, but that's me. My '51 sedan was originally black- I changed it to French gray/Admiral blue two tone since my '51 Pacemaker was already black. I just didn't want two black cars. This is an old pic of the sedan..0
-
I would redo the paint in the original color. The red used for these cars is beautiful. Just my 2 cents worth...0
-
It is your car. Paint it what ever color you like.0
