terraplane valve stems

just about to order an engine rebuild kit from Dale Cooper for my 37T motor,but am wondering if i should order the 38T instead as the 38 terraplanes apparently had thinner valve stems.Anybody have any advice on this ? thanks,skip

    Yes, definitely go for the thinner (11/32") valve stems and guides. Less inertia, and therefore less load on the timing gears.

    Does this apply to the 33T8 as well?

    The '33 T8 has 5/16" valve stems, so stick with them if they are still okay, otherwise replace with 11/32". The T8 is a unique one-year-only engine, and still has roller cam followers, so best to stick to the original size if possible. The valves are the same as Essex 6's from '27 thru '33, and H 8's up to 1935.

    Believe you will need 38 and up valve spring retainers and keepers also.

    Not necessary, as the originals are 3/8" so the valves will go through the spring seats, and the retainers are the same. If you are using thicker stems in an earlier motor you need to drill out the spring seats.
