terraplane diff housing compared to railton

Is the diff housing/axle width on a 36 terraplane the same size as a 36 Railton 8? I am researching a diff swap for my 36T and my buddy has a railton 8,so if it works,we will do two the same, using ford housing and centres.Im not sure if the width of the chassis is the same though?

It may depend on the production date of the Railton. It's my understanding that some Railtons of a given year had chassis of the prior year, just owing to the time lapse between Railton's purchase and Hudson's shipping of the chassis and the use of that chassis in a completed car. That said, I think the tread width for '35 and '36 is the same anyway. Can't find that spec in my references, but the '36 chassis and body dimensions in general are more like that of a '35 than of a '37.
  • 37 Terraplane was a full foot wider than a 36, so the diff. hsng. would be wider also. Railton also bought 'leftover chassis' from the previous year to get a better price on them, so a 36 Railton may actually be built on a 35 Hudson/ Terraplane chassis. I'd carefully check the diff. width on both vehicles before doing anything.

The Terraplane chassis that was provided to Railton was 115 inch wheel base. The Hudson chassis were from 120 to 127 depending on if it were a six or an eight. I am not sure if this is an issue, or if the Coachbuilder building the Railton made a difference (there were some 55 builders active in and around London at the time.) I would say that the only way to be sure is to measure--twice.

'36 onwards were all the same width, and wider than '34 - '35. However, as cautioned, carefully check the measurement, as the Poms may have used an earlier year axle .

Railtons only used Terraplane chassis one year, after that they used Hudson. All Railtons are 8 cylinders and Terraplane was only 8 cylinders in '33. I would assume that the differencials of the Hudsons and Terraplanes were identical for each year???
  • differentials are,but are the external dimensions and mounting points of the housing the same?
