clutch woes

Hi All,

I seem to be having trouble with all of the vehicles lately.
With the 49 Hudson I got in it, pushed the clutch pedal to the floor, put in to neutral and started the car. When I put it in reverse I felt a pop thru the clutch pedal and then there was a tension..like the pedal wants to spring back when depressed, that is now present thru the full range of the pedal. The car would go into first and reverse and move fine...I didn't move it off the driveway.
Dad had said that it would need to be replaced..I was just wanting to have a little time between car problems,LOL!
Sooo...does it sound like time fer a new clutch?

  • Sounds more like something in the linkage broke, perhaps a taper pin. They're used to hold some of the shafts together like the one coming out of the bell housing and the one that hooks into it that pivots on a bracket on the frame on the opposite side. I'd start by checking all the clutch linkage first. It'll take two people, one to operate the pedal thru its travel and another person underneath to watch the linkage to see if there's any lost motion/ slippage in it.
  • Check if the clutch OVER RIDE SPRING BROKE. It take the pressure of the clutch pedal so pedal is easy to press and release. Walt.
  • Forgot about that one Walt. It's located on the outside of the left frame rail, kinda below the driver's door. Hooks onto the clutch linkage at the front and into a hole in the frame rail at the rear. Overall it's about a foot long and 3/4" to 1" in diameter and a tough son of a gun to put on. If that's it be very careful when replacing it!
  • hey walt...you were right,
I found a great big nasty spring under the car this morning, one of the hooked ends of the spring broke off. Sooo..where would one find a "new" Clutch Override Spring?
    Thanks,

Dave Kostansek has some in stock but you have to tell him what size clutch, year and model you have (there are different sizes). His number is in the roster. Phone before 8 PM.
  • Try Jason @ Vintage Coach Tues. thru Sat. 8am to 5pm. 909-823-9168
  • Thats the problem, today no one puts a little grease at both ends of the spring as they do not know what the spring is there for. All you standard clutch owners, make sure you lube the spring and the bracket to the pedal. Now to install that spring, in our days we had a Hudson tool to stretch it, install U shape bracket on pedal first, then hook spring to bracket and jacked the back end to clear the bracket on the frame and hook to the end. I now use a come along. Don't lose the U shape bracket as that is how the spring pulls pedal down after center over ride and does the same on pedal release. Walt. Make sure you find the U shape bracket. Go to the HUDSON SHOP SERVICE MANUAL, 1948 to 1952, page 7-10 and read the clutch pedal lever service.
