Something going right - recreation of 52 fabric

I just got these images from the weaver I have been working with on recreating the original fabric for my 1952 Hudson Hornet. She has been working on research, threads, and weave; here are the results. I hope to have my hands on samples with in the month. It is nice to have something going right.

Once you have the pattern, will she make enough to do the car or is the pattern sent to a manufacture to make?

In photo 3 the sample on the right looks like the color and strip combination pattern on my 52 Hornet. Can't tell by the picture about the material used or the thread design, looks a little fuzzy more like yarn than thread. But it is the closest I've seen to the pattern on my car.

Thanks for shareing the photos. Which pattern is closest to your seats?

She will be making it once I approve the pattern.

In the last picture, the fabric on the right is the sample I sent her. She has found a yarn that will give the velvet stripe. The one on the left is three different trys at the stripe. All of the pictures are of different stage of her experimenting. Not only is she having to match yarn for color and texture, durability & flammability come into play. The step she is showing here is taking all new thread and weaving it so it lines up perfectly with the original. The next step is for her to put her knowledge into practice and create her copy. I am hopeful that it will be very very close to the original.

Thanks for the clarification Michael. This process is very interesting. Will you let us know how much the material will be when she sorts everything out.

Again thanks for sharing this with us. Lee O'Dell
  • Would this be the same pattern as the 51 year model?

Her original quote was within a few dollars of SMS, and their fabric was not an exact match. Once the yarn is all selected, I should get the final quote.

That is a good question, but I do not know. I have a 52 and have never seen 51 fabric.

The $64K question is- might she be interested in doing this on an ongoing, "to order" basis? I can see where sorting out the yarns is a bit of a job in the beginning, but once she has the patterns, would she be price-competitive (or does she even want to do it)?

She seems to weave special projects for a variety of applications. I am pretty sure she would be happy to earn more money and preserve history by weaving more 52 fabric or even recreating other Hudson fabrics. As I said, she is just about the same price as SMS. The only difference is her fabric is going to be a very close match, unlike the SMS fabric. The real question is, can you convince me to give up my source that has taken me so long to cultivate

Maybe if enough people order, could we get a group price?
  • There is no need to "Give up your source" . Just let everyone buy through you and add 15% for your trouble ,

    Michael-

That's great!! A lot of folks have been in need of this for some time. I would say, keep your source and be the dealer. Next in line, how about the "other" color for 52 & 53's, which is the brown weave. Similar type of pattern, but different colors. Where could it go from here? How about 51 options, since 51's are more plentiful. After that, perhaps '54, then move on to the earlier stepdowns. This sideline might help you through your crunch time. Just a thought.

    Hi Scott

While both the 51 and 52 Hornets have stripped patterns they are not the same.
